The murder weapon was identified in the original, televised version of this episode as a .25 caliber Ruger pistol. But for some reason in the DVD version of this episode, the word "Ruger" has been dubbed over and replaced with a fictional brand, "Fluger." Yet the subtitles show the original "Ruger" brand in the dialog.
This episode appears to be based on the 1962 People v. Ortiz case.
Lieutenant Anita Van Buren tells Detectives Lennie Briscoe and Rey Curtis that they have two weeks to identify the dead girl before her corpse is "sent to Potter's field." A Potter's field is a cemetery containing the graves of paupers and unknown and unclaimed people. Hart Island Is New York City's "Potter's Field": the location of a 101-acre (0.41 km2) cemetery, the largest tax-funded cemetery in the world. Burials on Hart Island began shortly after the American Civil War.
Detective Rey Curtis says that the music publisher's office had been closed the previous day for a Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur. The most solemn day on the Jewish calendar, it occurred on September 23, 1996, two days before this 1996 episode aired.
