Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the murder of book editor Joan Timberman who was found bludgeoned to death in the home of lawyer Diane Posner and college professor Charles Evans. Posner was away for the night at their country home and Evans was at a symposium at Vassar. Joan was smart and ambition and was editing Evans' latest manuscript. The police follow several possible leads but when they catch Diane Posner in a lie and forensics finds traces of the victim's hair in her car, she is arrested and charged with murder. Evidence however begins to suggest that Posner may be lying to protect Evans but the murderer is someone else altogether.
