By the end of this episode, Jerry Orbach was so sick he could barely speak. In one scene they pulled back and added his voice later. Also, the verdict scene was rewritten so that all the dialog had to be whispered so that the Briscoe character could be featured. To explain this unusual use of the handicam perspective, the 'walkout' scene was added where the judge bars uniformed officers from being present in the courtroom after the police leave in protest.
Actor Peter Coyote (Mike LaSalle) will go on to play murder suspect Lionel Shill on Self-made (2007) and most notably Los Angeles County District Attorney Jerry Hardin on Law & Order: LA (2010).
Actress Carey Lowell reprises her role of Jamie Ross in this episode. She first appeared in Causa Mortis (1996) as Executive Assistant District Attorney McCoy's new partner, before becoming an Assistant District Attorney Ross had worked as a defense attorney for one of New York's large law firms. Monster (1998) was her final episode as an ADA, after that she went back to being a defense attorney and appeared in a few later episodes going up against McCoy in court as opposing council. In this episode it is revealed that she is no longer an attorney and became appointed as a Supreme Court judge.
