Since the boys have put off doing it for two weeks in a row, Ward makes Wally and Beaver do the yard work instead of hanging out with their friends this Saturday. By Ward's estimation, it should take them no longer than a couple of hours. The work includes piling up some trash for Mr. Peck, the trash hauler, to take away to the dump. Because they spend much of the time goofing off, Wally and Beaver finish the work much later than expected and too late for Mr. Peck to come and pick up the trash. Wally and Beaver know that their father will be angry at them for being so irresponsible. Eddie, using Lumpy's car (against Lumpy's own wants), offers to haul away the trash to the dump for half what Mr. Peck would have done it for, to which Wally and Beaver agree. Wally and Beaver believe that they have averted the wrath of their father - indeed, both Ward and June, when they return home, are happy to see the tidy condition of their yard - until a Mr. Hill stops by the house.
