The Thatcher Family

Warning: Spoilers
In a road to the past, after watching Party of Five, I decided to see another family drama. Brings the life issues of The Thatcher family, with the father Drew, his wife Libby (40), son Charles "Corky" (18), daughter Rebecca (14 I think), and Drew's daughter Paige (the oldest, who shared room for 10 years with half sister Becca). In the Pilot, Corky starts Marshall highschool freshman year (9th grade) along his sister Rebecca, after switching from Fowler, the school where he was going before. Now there's a new situation, new classmates, different place. Initially, he's scared about how he'll be received, while Becca, thinking in popularity, superficiality, is worried about how he'll embarrass her. Drew and Libby think that if their son can't make it in this school, where the level is partially higher for him, he'll have to return to Fowler. Still, he should never be understimated. In first day, he finds himself alone at the beginning, but then he befriends Tyler, a good guy, who leads him to their class. For some reason, it's strange Becca didn't lead him, since their share the class too. There, he sits next to "geek" student, who also is kind to him. Sadly in this world not everyone is so kind, and a good looking classmate, Rona, makes a comment about Corky being Becca's brother, many laugh, so the writing teacher must calm the brief moment. The teacher soon gives homework about Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, and Corky has no trouble on it. In the cafeteria, he sits with his sister, her friend Maxine, and the fellow. The problem is that for the earlier comment, and nice words from Rona to Corky (which Becca, Tyler, and the rest know aren't really meant), he thinks she likes him. In the test about the famous writers, for some reason, they are sitting close, so Rona takes advantage of the crush to copy Corky's answers (while he dreams of a dance which might never happen). The teacher notices it, but for understimating his intelligence, he thinks he was copying Rona's answers. Later, he doesn't tell his parents what really happened, even though Becca begs him to, because he didn't cheat, the situation is pretty unfair. Still, in the principal's office, Corky, accompanied by his parents, proves that he knows everything about Poe, the Raven's book, so the teacher and the principal finally realize their mistake. That scene was memorable, as Drew and Libby were touched by their son, who demonstrates people how wrong they are about him. The principal decides to call Rona, but as the scene ends, it's unclear if she had a punishment or not. Anyway, Becca stands up for her brother in the cafeteria pushing Rona's lunch in her shirt. Tyler, who never agreed with Rona's behavior, pursues Becca and suggests taking his brother to visit her and Corky at home.

On the other storyline of the day, Paige moves back into the house after breaking up with her boyfriend, and Drew is patient with her, telling her that whenever she wants, she can talk to them. Turns out that currently she has not a great sisters bond with Becca, but she has a better siblings bond with Corky. She helps him in maths, with decimal numbers, which turn out to be his hardest challenge. Anyway, Drew, who wanted to be an architect but couldn't, tells his son that he's proud of him, he knows how hard he works. In the meantime, Libby's 40th birthday is coming, so the family prepares a small party. He also considers opening a business with fellow construction workers, but at the end he chooses not to, given the 50000 $ he'd have to put. He won't risk the school case (Fowler was more expensive), or the family, as they are not wealthy, they live check by check, even with both of them working. Instead, Drew buys his wife a nice ring, while the family celebrates the party, where Libby's mother is too. By the way, Tyler visits with his younger brother Donny, who also has Down syndrome. In the house, Corky kindly invites him to join them, and can make him lose the fear, and feel more comfortable.

There's no much information of the series, no much votes, that's why I wanted to write what I saw. The idea, the premise it's great, surely could help many persons in the USA, and who knows, maybe some more around the world. This is a united family, stronger than many others, that's the sensation the Pilot gives. For some reason, I think there was needed another family member, maybe an older brother, or a younger. Seems like Corky, despite having his parents, Paige and Becca, is somehow alone. A brother could have made the family more complete. Still, that's what I got used to, never mind. For moments, the episode is really touching, and the cast did a great job here.
