- An Army scout nicknamed the listener returns to Tombstone finds his Apache wife killed by the Apaches in retribution for his attacks on Apache renegades. He goes on a killing spree forcing Earp to lead an Apache party to try to arrest him.
- Army scout Tom Barrows nicknamed the "Listener" rides into Tombstone after leading the Army in the capture of renegade Apaches lead by Francisco who he killed with no reason. He earned his nickname for cutting off and wearing the ears of the Indians he has killed. He is planning to return to his home in the mountains with his Apache wife but Earp suggests he wait due to Apache animosity toward him. He declines to wait so Earp decides to join him to see his place and meet his wife. They find Apache tracks in the area and Barrows place burned with his wife stabbed to death in it. The knife is from the Francisco clan. Barrows seems to not care that his wife was killed saying he can get another. Barrows knows Earp can't do anything to catch the guilty Apaches but Earp goes to the reservation to report the incident. Once there he learns from Cochise's eldest son Tahzay that five Apaches have been killed by Barrows who left his mark on them. Earp, Indian Agent Smith, and Tahzay lead a group of Apaches after Barrows with the whole tribe scouting the area for him. Earp wants Barrows alive but in the end only learns what drove him.—Anonymous
