Adam and Mary return to Walnut Grove to surprise Charles and Caroline for Christmas, just ahead of an unrelenting blizzard. Mary, Adam, Hester Sue, the Wilders and the Ingalls gather for dinner, singing and to be entertained by Charles and Almonzo playing the fiddle and the guitar at the Ingalls homestead on Christmas Eve. Soon they discover they are all snowbound together. To pass the time they begin to share memories of Christmases past. Caroline shares the story of a special necklace she received from her step-father their first Christmas together. Almonzo shares the story of the Christmas his brother tried to tell him the truth about Santa Claus. Laura shares the story of the Christmas in Kansas when Mr. Edwards came. Hester Sue shares a memory of a Christmas from her past during The Civil War. Christmas morning arrives and the presents for the children are in the barn. The only way to get to them because the snow is so high is to climb out the 2nd floor window and walk to the barn to get to the presents.
