Ready, Willing and Abel.
ExplorerDS678923 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After another day of educating the future of our country, Miss Beadle climbed on her carriage to head home, when some little bastard started chasing all the other students around with a snake. They all screamed bloody murder and ran, which ended up spooking Miss Beadle's horse and it took off in a flash, pulling the carriage and frantic teacher with it. Thankfully another rider was able to stop the horse, but in the process, Beadle was thrown from the carriage, and I've got to give props to Charlotte Stewart for doing her own stunt in that scene. So, with Miss Beadle laid up, the school board needed a substitute, and who better to fit the bill than Caroline Ingalls? The Olesons, Doc Baker and Mr. Hanson came to tell her in person. She was reluctant to accept at first, but as soon as Harriet mentioned possible favoritism on account of having her own daughters in the class, she made up her mind and took the job. Caroline used to be a teacher, but that was a long time ago and she's certain there are new methods now. Needless to say, Mrs. Ingalls' first day of class was awkward, both for her and the students, some of which did not accept her as a teacher. When it came time for reading, one of the first students called was Abel McKay, who was obviously a 30-year-old man posing as a student, and it was revealed that he couldn't read, which warranted a few giggles from the other pupils. As if Caroline didn't have enough children to deal with, Harriet attempted to butter her up by giving her more for her eggs and build Nellie and Willie as altruistic angels who adored and were dedicated to their schoolwork. Caroline wasn't buying it.

When Abel didn't come to class, Caroline went out to the McKay place to have a talk with his pa, Baker, who saw no problem with his son wanting to quit school and possibly better himself. She managed to convince Hoss Cartwright to come back to school, and even made the rest of the class her deputy teachers to help him. She assigned each student a letter of the alphabet to be read aloud. Nellie's letter was B...how fitting. Putting the letters together formed words, which Abel read aloud. For a day, everything was going splendidly when who should barge in but Heigh-Ho Harriet, who assumed Caroline was "pandering to her favorite student" and put down Abel right to face, causing him to run off again. Mrs. Ingalls quit on the spot. Once again, Doc Baker, Mr. Hanson, and Nels with his big-mouth wife in tow, tried to appeal to Caroline's good nature to reconsider. She told them what happened and Harriet tried to stammer out an explanation, but realized she was wasting her time. Despite the men asking nicely, Caroline had to turn them down. As if that weren't bad enough, guess who they elected to take her place? Instead of bothering to find a decent person to fill in for Miss Beadle, they went to the bitch that was the reason for Caroline quitting in the first place. So, Mrs. Oleson's first day of class was very awkward, mainly for herself and not her students, who didn't come. On her way home from selling eggs, Caroline ran into Abel, who told her his mind was made up and he wasn't going back to school. He made her a letter A sculpture, which she pointed meant that in just the short time she tutored him, the letters and numbers have become engraved in his brain and won't ever leave. Well, after some moping and self deprecation, Abel agreed to go back if Caroline agreed, which she did. After a few days, Abel made real progress and had more self esteem, so by the time Miss Beadle came back, the whole school was singing Caroline's praises and she knew she made a difference and this is one experience she may never live down.

You know how I referred to Abel as Hoss Cartwright earlier? Well that was before I found out that Dirk Blocker is in fact the son of Dan Blocker, Big Hoss himself. Abel McKay did not appear on the show again, but his father Baker would appear twice more. Anyway, School Mom was a very good episode. Karen Grassle was magnificent, as was Dirk Blocker, and Katherine MacGregor was great as Harriet, a character who suffers from being unable to think before she talks, and this is one of many, many instances where she displays this imperfection. Many good scenes, like Caroline playing baseball, and the second meeting between her and the school board, particularly Karl Swenson's performance was hilarious there. So if you like Caroline, you want to see how she fairs as a teacher, check this one out. Mrs. Oleson would get her day in class in a Season 7 episode, which doesn't hold a candle to this one.

Ma The Teacher
mitchrmp10 February 2013
This episode opens with Miss Beatle leaving. One of the boys finds a snake and begins scaring all the girls with it. Unfortunately, the horse spooks and throws Miss Beatle from the wagon. She sprains her leg, and Dr. Baker won't allow her to return to her job until it's completely healed. So...since the Ingalls are the star of the show, there is no other person in all of Walnut Grove who can teach school like she can! Mrs. Ingalls hesitates in taking the job until Harriet Olsen hints that Mrs. Ingalls just may show favoritism. She takes the job.

There is a young man (I'd say about 16) who has always reminded me of someone...I just never could put my finger on it. But now I know. Abel is the son of Dan Blocker, Hoss Cartwright on Bonanza. I was so excited to make this discover and can now see the resemblance. Able cannot read and is made fun of by all the kids in class. Even Laura and Mary call him "Dumb Able."

It's very amusing to see the animosity between Mrs. Ingalls and Mrs. Olsen. It's also amusing to see the animosity between the Ingalls kids and the Olsen kids. The Olsen's really bring a lot of character to this show.

In this episode, Caroline comes home after her first day and expects to have to cook supper. Charles announces that he has everything cooked. In future episodes, Charles cannot cook. This seems to be a big blunder in this episode.

In praise of Karen Grassle
gregorycanfield2 November 2021
If possible, I would have given this episode 20 stars! Karen Grassle absolutely shines in this episode. Despite the presence of several other actors, Karen's performance is almost exclusively responsible for what makes this episode great. When Miss Beadle is injured, Carolyn takes her place as the school teacher. Carolyn immediately demonstrates what can be accomplished, if a teacher truly cares about her students. Carolyn is determined to reach an older student, who thinks he can't learn to read. Despite looking about 10 years older, Dirk Blocker was no more than 17 at the time. He was good as Abel. Nobody was better than Karen Grassle. That woman had me feeling every emotion at the same time. Several times, throughout the episode, I wasn't sure whether I was going to laugh or cry. I think it turned out to be a little of each. If I were forced to make a criticism of Karen, it could only be the silly bonnets she had to wear. Everything else was fine. Because of the time period of the show, Karen's way of dressing left everything to the imagination. Despite this, Karen was very, very sexy! I loved the way she matched wits with Mrs Oleson. You could see the emotion bubbling out of her! Again, an absolutely superlative episode, thanks to Ms. Karen Grassle.

Learning To Read!!
ellisel25 November 2007
The opening clip of "School Mom" started with Caroline Ingalls assuming the role of teacher in Miss Beadle's position. Abel Makay had struggled to learn freely about reading and writing. Children in the school did not understand he maintained a severe learning problem. Adding insult to injury, most of the kids called him "Dumb Abel" all throughout school. Laura Ingalls mentioned that name contrary to her ma's wishes; moreover, someone's mouth would be washed out -- from the likes of Caroline Ingalls -- with lye soap if that name was ever mentioned again in her presence. From there, the children slowly started to announce consonants and vowels -- on individual pieces of paper -- for proper sounding to Abel Makay.

The school children started to form words that Abel Makay could say more freely. Significant progress was made in the school ... all in the hope for Abel Makay to read and write on a consistent basis. Mrs. Oleson then stuck her nose and disrupted the instructional day. She did so because she thought a student was obtaining some form of special privilege when -- in reality -- Abel Makay wanted to read so desperately. Caroline Ingalls became furious and immediately wrote "compassion" and "understanding" on the blackboard in hope the children would know the meaning of these words. The kids did not know those words at all; the same for Mrs. Oleson.

The whole school board came to the Ingalls house about this outburst in town. She spoke to Mr. Hansen about Mrs. Oleson's deliberate interference in the school. Mr. Hansen told Mr. Oleson that Mrs. Oleson would be punished harshly for her disruptions to the children in the school. Mrs. Ingalls had a discussion with Abel Makay about returning to school. He would return to school and learn how to read books ... albeit on a gradual basis. A Fat 14!! A highly recommended episode from the 1974-1975 Television Season!! A+++!!

Just one observation

Warning: Spoilers
If Mrs. Ingalls had washed any child of mine's mouth out, I'd have done something very drastic to her. Mrs Oleson as a teacher would have been - interesting!

anyone any age can learn!

This episode has a good lesson but its not all that good IMO. Miss Beadle is hurt in a riding accident so she has to stay home for a while until her leg is all healed. In the meantime the townsfolk went to Mrs ingals to ask her if she could be the one to take over teaching the children until miss beadle recovers. Mrs Olsen does not like this idea and just to spite her Mrs ingalls accepts. When she begins to teach she meets a 16 year old boy who still can't read. After a while she gets a system going to teach him how to read. Just as she was to make a breakthrough Mrs Olsen ruins all of it with her BiG mouth!! Go and see what happens in the end. This episode tells 2 important lessons. Its worth the watch. But not the best episode in the series. It gets a little boring half way in! Continue to episode 10
