- Cassandra Cooper: I want homework.
- Caroline Ingalls: What?
- Cassandra Cooper: I want homework!
- Caroline Ingalls: Well, if you want homework, you're gonna have to go to school.
- Laura Ingalls Wilder: [voice-over] So James and Cassandra came to live with Ma and Pa and Albert and Carrie and Baby Grace. The Little House would be very full... of love.
- [Charles puts his boots on and suspenders and get ready to prepare for breakfast]
- Charles Ingalls: Make that three eggs this morning, darlin'. I'm starving.
- Caroline Ingalls: Charles Ingalls, you better watch that waistline.
- Charles Ingalls: Well, I didn't have a snack last night. That's why I'm so hungry this morning.
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh, you didn't snack?
- Charles Ingalls: Mm-mm.
- Caroline Ingalls: Then why is the cookie jar empty, and the milk can half full?
- Charles Ingalls: Those kids.
- Caroline Ingalls: Charles!
- Charles Ingalls: [Giggles] There's not much I can do about the cookie jar, but I'll have the milk can full in a few minutes.
- Charles Ingalls: Caroline, what do you expect me to do? We can hardly make ends meet now. I can't afford to take care of two more young 'uns!
- Reverend Robert Alden: [to Charles] Mr. Tomkins just told me he wants to adopt both of the children.
- Charles Ingalls: I thought he said he needed some time to think about it.
- Reverend Robert Alden: He just told me now. He wants to have them on Saturday.
- Charles Ingalls: Saturday? That's awfully soon. We don't even have the papers ready.
- Reverend Robert Alden: The papers can wait. Charles, the sooner you make this break, the better. I've seen the children at church, the way they are with you and Caroline. Believe me, Charles, the sooner, the better.
- Caroline Ingalls: [They have arrived to see James] Hi.
- [Caroline want to make sure James is all right. She was worried sick about him]
- Caroline Ingalls: Does it still hurt?
- James Cooper: Not as bad as before.
- Dr. Hiram Baker: That pain will be gone in a day or two. A boy your age, you'll be up running around as usual in 5, maybe 6 weeks. Just don't put any pressure on it until I say so.
- James Cooper: Yes, sir.
- Charles Ingalls: I can make him a crutch tomorrow.
- Dr. Hiram Baker: Fine.
- [They approved that. To James and Cassandra]
- Charles Ingalls: Well, you two, it looks like we ought to be getting home.
- James Cooper: Mr. Tomkins... he's going be awful mad.
- Charles Ingalls: Well, I suppose he is, but that shouldn't matter much to us. When I say home, I mean our place.
- [What did Cassandra say, and James say?]
- Charles Ingalls: I mean, I want you to come live with us. Isn't that right, Caroline?
- Caroline Ingalls: [smiles] That's right.
- [How did Cassandra like that?]
- Caroline Ingalls: That's right.
- [James will like that with a happy smile]
- Charles Ingalls: It's gonna be pretty darn crowded, but that's just the way it's going to be.
- James Cooper: Gee, Mr. Ingalls. Gee...
- [James will get lucky. Cassandra will be delighted]
- Charles Ingalls: Come on, let's go home.
- Charles Ingalls: Caroline, this is James.
- Caroline Ingalls: Hello, James.
- Charles Ingalls: And this is Cassandra.
- Caroline Ingalls: Welcome to our home.
- [Cassandra bursts into tears and grabs Caroline around the waist]
- Caroline Ingalls: What in the world? Oh, it's all right. It's all right.
- James Cooper: [in a trance] Ma. She looks like... Ma! I almost thought you were.
- Cassandra Cooper: I got an "A" on a test today!
- Caroline Ingalls: Did you?
- Charles Ingalls: That's not an easy thing to do. My daughter is pretty tough on grades.
- Cassandra Cooper: I really like her!
- James Cooper: I never used to have fun at school.
- Charles Ingalls: Yeah, well, school can't all be fun.
- James Cooper: But most of it is.
- Caroline Ingalls: More coffee?
- Laura Ingalls Wilder: No, thank you.
- Mary Ingalls Kendall: No, not for me.
- Caroline Ingalls: There's no point in you both waiting, you know. There's nothing we can do.
- Laura Ingalls Wilder: Mom, I want to stay.
- Mary Ingalls Kendall: Me, too.
- [Caroline put the pot of coffee over the stove]
- Caroline Ingalls: The thought of those children spending another night out there alone...
- Mary Ingalls Kendall: Ma, don't. They'll be found.
- Caroline Ingalls: Never should have let them go to the Tomkins'. We know it was wrong.
- Laura Ingalls Wilder: Ma, stop blaming yourself. They have to find a home.
- Caroline Ingalls: I know.
- Caroline Ingalls: [Arrived] Oh!
- [Cassandra get to Caroline]
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh, we were so worried. How's James?
- Charles Ingalls: Doc Baker's putting a splint on his leg right now.
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh!
- Cassandra Cooper: He cried real hard.
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh, it must have been terrible.
- Cassandra Cooper: Is Mr. Tomkins gonna whip James again for running away?
- [Caroline finds out from Cassandra. Well, what did Caroline say? Charles declines and change his mind]
- Charles Ingalls: No, Cassandra, he's not going to whip him anymore.
- [But suddenly come out is Dr. Baker]
- Dr. Hiram Baker: You can come in now.
- Charles Ingalls: Thanks, Doc.
- [They go in to see James]
- [Knock on door]
- Caroline Ingalls: Don't tell me other folks get up as early as we do.
- Charles Ingalls: Just make those eggs.
- [Mr. Ingalls will get the door and answer]
- Isaiah Tomkins: Ah, Mr. Ingalls.
- Charles Ingalls: Mr. Tomkins, Ma'am.
- Isaiah Tomkins: I'm sorry to bother you this early, but we're looking for the young 'uns they didn't come home last night.
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh, no.
- Isaiah Tomkins: You haven't seen them then?
- Charles Ingalls: No, we haven't.
- Caroline Ingalls: Did you find out where they went yesterday?
- Isaiah Tomkins: No. I thought they was in school, until Mr. Ingalls and Mrs. Wilder told me different. They probably run off.
- Caroline Ingalls: What makes you say that?
- Isaiah Tomkins: Afraid of a whipping, maybe. I had to give the boy a good one the other night.
- Charles Ingalls: Why? What for?
- Isaiah Tomkins: Stealing.
- Charles Ingalls: Not James. He wouldn't do that.
- Isaiah Tomkins: Mr. Ingalls, he did and he lied about it. The same way he lied about being in school. Oh, he's a bad one. He needs a belt to straighten him out.
- Charles Ingalls: Well, I don't agree with you. But it's not really important now. I'll get Adam and Almanzo, and we'll start looking.
- Beth Tomkins: Thank you.
- Isaiah Tomkins: I'll be at my place in case you find 'em.
- Charles Ingalls: Well, you're not going to look for them?
- Isaiah Tomkins: They come back or not, it's up to them. I give 'em a good home, they don't appreciate it.
- Beth Tomkins: Isaiah!
- Isaiah Tomkins: I've got to get back to work.
- [Isaiah Tomkins heads back to work, and his wife Beth Tomkins, they both leaving]
- Charles Ingalls: I'll settle up the horse.
- [Charles will find them. Caroline will be waiting]
- [They keep going and going]
- Cassandra Cooper: Maybe we should go back.
- James Cooper: No. We'll get to a road soon. We have to.
- Cassandra Cooper: But I'm afraid.
- James Cooper: Look, as long as we're together, nothing's gonna happen. Come on.
- [They continue walking, but suddenly, James stepped and get his leg caught in the bear claw trap]
- James Cooper: Aaahhhh!
- Cassandra Cooper: James!
- James Cooper: My leg! I think it's broken!
- Cassandra Cooper: What do we do?
- James Cooper: I don't know.
- Cassandra Cooper: I've got to go back.
- James Cooper: No, you can't!
- Cassandra Cooper: I have to. They'll never find us here. You could die!
- James Cooper: Cassandra, no! No!
- [Cassandra walks away and go back to get help and refuses to listen to her brother James. He was hurt]
