One of the bachelorettes at the charity auction is named Brenda Besselo. This is a reference to George Reeves, who played Clark Kent / Superman in Superman and the Mole-Men (1951) and Adventures of Superman (1952). His real name was George Besselo.
In the episode, Perry White is comparing Lois and Clark to Hepburn and Tracy. Jimmy jokingly adds Homer and Marge. Lois then looks to Clark and comments Charles and Di. This episode aired in October 1995. Charles and Diana had separated in 1992, and then were divorced in August 1996, less than a year after this episode aired.
When initially broadcast in the UK, the title was changed to "I Love You to Death", due to the (then current) trouble with the Irish Republican Army.
The title refers to the 1912 song "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" with lyrics by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff and music by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of "The Isle O' Dreams", and Olcott sang the song in the show. The most famous recording was made by tenor John McCormack during World War I.
The safe deposit box broken into during the episode is owned by Dennis O'Neil, a reference to famed comic book writer & editor Denny O'Neil.
