BACK TO THE RIDICULOUS
asalerno1020 May 2022
An absurd argument, a group of space hippies arrive on the planet just before it is destroyed, the story is so absurd that it includes a Dr. Smith with green hair and having extraordinary strength in a ridiculous version of Hercules. To skip and watch the next episode.

"That IS Too Bad."
kensirhan-8619821 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As Elaan of Troyius told Captain Kirk on learning her attempted-murder victim would recover, so it goes with this majorly underrated segment of Lost de la Space. It had its cheesy moments - the idiotic "pump" mechanisms the Abbott & Costello space-hippie duo were operating, D. J. Travanty's ghastly dank wig & Dr. Smith as an extraterrestrial Hercules - but the bearded shorter of the 2 (who got no lines & thus had no closeups) & Travanty were very easy on the eyes (long-armed stubble-faced wicked-eyed Travanty had some Big Booty going on that a baker's dozen years later was kept completely under conservative wraps as F. X. Furillo; no doubt in closeup (sans that ridiculous rag) & when he has to lift/carry that box he engenders plenty of gender-neutral drooling!), the "Little Master" references were a nice touch (along with Professor Robinson turning the "Big Master!" tables on that delinquent quartet) and, as I was given in a recent rerun to recall, a forgotten classic moaning from Dr. Smith that had put me on the floor: "Treachery, thy name is woman!" ("Ain't it the truth!" to borrow from Bugs Bunny.) So it ain't top-notch space opera; they've done worse - the very mention of something about a "Vegetable Rebellion" leaves us recoiling in horror - and this planet-blowing mission happily got the Jupiter 2 back where she belonged, in space. The humorous final indignity of being nearly run into a galactic ditch by the departing hippies, to the girl's laughing rejoinder of "Get that heap off the road, Little Masters!" was, unfortunately, then tempered by some sanctimonious statement or other by the Robot as a pre-Springer Final Thought. But in the main it's entertainingly watchable - many others, paging "The Toymaker" & "Space Vikings"! have us just groaning with embarrassment we even like this production. But the wince-inducing segments are counterbalanced with the many excellent episodes, starting with numero uno "The Reluctant Stowaway." This one doesn't rate up there on the It's Quality Work! scale, but I still rank it as an 8 for its glittering little jewels of Merriment & Frivolity. Would that they could have sustained such quality more consistently, with (plenty) less focus on just Dr. Smith, "William Robinson" & the Robot - "Yoo-hoo, Mr. Antimatter Man!" - as the 1st season had involved more of the family so well. But we have to savor what we can when we can, & just keep the love of the Space Family Robinson as has been the case "For a long long time."

Smith, The Mighty! And a Mediocre Episode
bigfrankie-4346423 December 2022
Based on faded memory, Collision of Planets was going to be a terrible episode earning a typical Mid-Season Two episode rating of a "1". However, from my recent viewing it is not that bad.

Yes, it is a drop in quality from most of the first third of Season Three and is more like some of the mid-Season Two episodes with heavy camp and non-sense. That said, it has some very funny moments, such as when the head hippie asks Dr. Smith if he was Prof Robinson and Major West's father!

Also, the first time Dr. Smith tries to regain his strength back by exercising, is laugh out loud funny, especially is running and the look on Penny's face is classic.

On the down-side the lazy loopy hippies are a terrible idea, executed in an idiotic way. The head hippie (Daniel J Travanti of Hill Street Blues) is annoying beyond belief. And the plot just stumbles along.

Dr. Smith as Sampson or maybe The Incredible Hulk, with a green Harpo Marx wig is initially funny but grows old quickly.

Rebels With A Star Trek-ish Score
StuOz2 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The first season of classic Star Trek had some great Alexander Courage scores but the second season was mildly damaged by the too-loud or too-light-hearted scores of composer Gerald Fried. Well guess what, Fried also scored two episodes of LIS and Collision Of The Planets was one of them. His LIS music here is just as light hearted and even more loud but the episode itself is so insane that the Fried score is almost welcome. We needed new music at this stage in the season.

LIS year two was silly nearly every week but year three only went silly sometimes, like this hour, and this made the over-the-top camp less of a problem. Granted, Collision is not the best of year three (the humour in Two Weeks In Space was better), but if you go along with the humour of Jonathan Harris and the rebel gang, well, you might have a fun Bewitched/I Dream Of Jeannie-type joy ride. Who could not laugh at the end bit in space where the "bike riders" over-take the Jupiter 2 "Get that heap off the road, little masters". Interestingly, Don and John respond to that crazy line in a deadly serious way????

Other highlights include the teaser (note The Time Tunnel props) and the bits where John/Don go to the rebel gang campsite and have a few clash of culture exchanges. Some male viewers will find the young female rebel rather hot to look at.

Added note: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea submarine props are used in an imaginative way.

Nonsensical
jamesrupert201426 May 2023
A team of space hippies/bikers are sent to destroy the planet on which the Robinsons are currently stranded before it crashes into an inhabited world. Colliding worlds is always an entertaining trope (perhaps first seen on TV in the Rocky Jones, Space Ranger story-arc 'Crash of the Moons' (1954)) but little is done with the premise in this limp episode. Smith tampers with the alien demolition-crew's gear and is exposed to a gas that turns his hair green and gives him tremendous strength (which, Samson like, can be diminished by a trim) - why this could possibly happen is never explained (nor is why it doesn't happen to John Robinson when he is exposed to the same gas - I suspect that the answer is because it's only 'funny' when it's Smith who gets the booming voice and fake muscles). The episode is full of goofy musical cues, childish over-cranking effects when Smith is 'exercising', silly dialogue, and seems to have been just cobbled together from fragments left on the story room floor. The only redeeming moment is John Robinson's answer to the problem presented by space-hippies who are resistant to his ray-gun. Daniel Travanti, later famous as Captain Furillo in the popular 'Hill Street Blues' (1981) is pretty good the alien leader (considering what he's given to work with).

Big Master!
gcanfield-2972729 October 2020
A gold star to anyone who figured out that "Dan Travanty" was Daniel J Travanti of Hill Street Blues. Travanti is quite annoying as the leader of a group of space hippies. His fake long hair was ahead of its time, I'm sure. The story is OK. The hippies are dedicated to destroying the planet, while Dr Smith takes on the persona of Hercules.

Collision Of Planets Great Lost In Space Episode!!
EliotNess481708 May 2022
Who is the douche that only gave this episode two stars?? This was an interesting third season episode that broke the usual storylines that Irwin Allen was known for..Creature episodes.. In the 1960's hippie subculture permeated every part of the entertainment industry. I first saw this episode as a young child..It is still great!!
