The real reason for high divorce rates
aramis-112-80488029 March 2023
On a singles cruise Gopher is caught between two women (Susan Silo, Barbi Benton) who pretend they can only speak French.

Patty Duke (Astin) is after a man (Ricky Nelson) whom she believes is an old flame with amnesia.

Frankie Avalon shows up with a very early form of pc and tries to match all the singles via computer. Only he has his own eye on Julie.

Frankie tries to persuade Julie "love" is a science while she argues "love" is a haphazard feeling one can't control.

In fact, I believe love is a decision and if people would make a (sometimes difficult) decision toward love rather than trusting some weird "feeling" or "sensation" we'd see less family dissolution. Just for another POV.

This is a fairly innocuous episode where even the "serious" tale of the usual three is watchable. And Barbi Benton always is.

French Lessons for Gopher

Warning: Spoilers
Hey, it's a special Valentine's Day cruise. Even Captain Stubing is going to participate in the randomized selection decided by computer. Frankie Avalon is the man in charge of the computer. It's a Nixdorf. I'm a fan of old-school computers. 'With that computer, I paired more off couples than Noah and his ark.' Frankie's really interested in Julie. Frankie still has the charm, I tell you what. Will Julie McCoy give in to the alpha Roman energy that fueled a thousand Beach Blanket Bingos? Patty Duke is back. Doc hits on her, but she's more interested in Rick Nelson. She thinks he's someone she knew long ago. He says he's no. Oh she's got quite a story to explain it. What's going on here? Meanwhile Barbi Benton and her friend are pretending to be French. Quite a ruse. Gopher offers to translate, but he's quickly in over his head. Young Shelly Long is one of the romantic hopefuls. She wears an ultra-frumpy swimsuit. What happens when Captain Stubing put his card into the machine? Divide by zero. Oh yeah, Jamie Farr is here too. He's a pork belly dealer. His nose is at least as big as his yacht. Barbi Benton can sure wear a sweater. This one won't lose. The romantic spirit is all over this episode. I'm not even a romantic person. In fact, I've quite cynical about the whole thing. I've been married for at least a thousand years, ya know. I don't remember what love looks like. I've always got the Boat. On Kafka's Love Boat Scale, this episode gets 3 1/2 * out of a possible 4 *.
