Suspense In the Gopher Dual Role
richard.fuller15 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Part two is not as bad as part one, but that is only because that grating music over shorelines for some reason was toned down here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure if I saw the Alaskan cruise or the 50 wedding cruise or even the Dallas cowboy cheerleaders cruise (I always hated that one), I would balk at them as well, but the Italian cruise was obviously long after I stopped watching the show.

Why does Merrill cling to Vicki's hand everywhere they go, when they are sightseeing? When Gopher appears and challenges the impostor, Guido, why not simply ask about something they said to Gopher on the last voyage? When his parents sailed? Ask him when Julie's parents sailed? Gopher would know that, Guido wouldn't.

So how do they catch him? SPOILER! Gopher hadn't done the report Capt. Stubing asked for, but Guido had.

Strange how Gopher seemed to have forgotten he had been KIDNAPPED for who knows how long and was running across Italy trying to catch back up with the ship. He said he simply forgot about the report.

Nevermind. None of it mattered. Christopher Norris decided it was Guido she really loved.

In the end, the episode reminded me of trying to watch shows like Wagon Train and never seeing a wagon train. They must have been running out of ideas, so we get ranches and exotic plazas built by rich eccentrics in the wild west.

Oddly enough, there is next to nothing of Isaac here, and not much of Doc.

I hadn't watched a Love Boat episode I'd never seen before in a very long time.

Want to know what the appeal was to a show called Love Boat? Don't look for it with this one.

Free Guido

Warning: Spoilers
We're limited with what we got here people. Unfortunately, you know uptight Marie Osmond was never going to get into a bikini. She's decided to marry the rich man her aunt wants, not John James. Fred Grandy is funny as Guido, pretending to be Gopher. It's pretty silly seeing the crew have to decide which is the real Gopher. Meredith and Candice can't believe their parents are getting a divorce (after 50 miserable years.) Ernest Borgnine sings Italian! Shelly doesn't bother to do any kind of accent. She's thinking perhaps of her starring role in the classic film Tentacles. On Kafka's Love Boat Scale, this episode gets 2 1/2 * out of a possible 5 *.
