Lucy Flips the Bird Would Have Been Funnier
kgraovac13 October 2023
Mooney puts Lucy in charge of bird-sitting his cockatiel named Greenback. Of course, she loses the bird which puts the ladies back on the roof to try and retrieve it. One good thing about this one-it's not as silly as the HERE'S LUCY episode "Lucy is a Bird Sitter", but it's an average episode for Season 3.

Jimmy Garrett's face is still spotty in the opening scene (for the second episode in a row---see also "Lucy Becomes a Father"). Did he recently have measles or chicken pox? Lucy is seen gluing trading stamps into a book to help finance a trip to Hawaii, which is a plot device to work in the use of a grass skirt, which will figure in later.

Vivan makes a reference to Season 1's "Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna" once the ladies are up on the roof, which is a nice bit of continuity. Lucy's get-up to retrieve the bird (oven mitts, flippers and Viv's grass skirt) is a little too goofy, but I guess the writers figured the scene needed some spicing up since most of the episode is just "meh". Even the pet store scene falls flat, and the piranha sight gag was done better on "Lucy Gets Jack Benny's Account" in 1967.
