***SPOILERS*** Let. Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, gets involved with this gang of toughs who are terrorizing the James Madison Trade School in Chicago. It's #1 hood Nick "Sharpy" Sharples, Tom Laughin, who's been trying to run the school by getting all the students to give in, with money and presents, to him or else he'll have them put in the hospital with cracked skulls. One of "Sharpy's' former gang members the now going straight Pistol Pete Marashi, Burt Reynolds, in on his sh*t-list for not only having nothing to do with him but talking to the police in what he did to his friend, blackjacked him, Roy Wilks, Mark Douglas, for refusing to pay him protection,$5.00 a week, money.
"Sharpy" later goes big time when the principle of the trade school Ralph Schnider, Stuart Randell, was going to report him to the police for working over Roy and he himself ended up getting worked over and thrown to his death out of his office window by a totally out of control and crazed "Sharpy". "Sharpy" even goes so far as having his hoods work over Pete's girlfriend Irene Hanson, Sue George, just to send a massage to Pete in him keeping his mouth shut in what he knows about his criminal activities in and out of school.
