- A hurried relocation to a cave is complicated by Hawkeye revealing he has claustrophobia.
- From the Post Op, it sounds like the 4077 is caught in a cross-fire of 105s (cannons). An idiot at I Corp refuses to move the fighting because the Signal Operating Instructions (SOI) manual Col. Potter is using was superseded; Potter cannot correctly respond to Victor Zulu. So, Col. Potter orders everyone to evacuate to an abandoned cave, 1/2 mile away, which the Koreans once used as an aid station. Hawkeye is uncharacteristically opposed to the new idea and it becomes apparent he suffers from fear of small spaces: claustrophobia. He ventures inside, but he cannot stay for long. - From the Post Op, it sounds like the 4077 is caught in a cross-fire of 105s (cannons). An idiot at I Corp refuses to move the fighting. First, I Corp believes that the 4077th MASH is 12 miles to the east from Ouijonbu, but Potter insists that they were there for 2 days, 3 weeks ago. Radar never filed the paperwork notifying HQ about the return to their original location. second, the Signal Operating Instructions (SOI) manual Col. Potter is using was superseded (he does not have the right code to confirm his own identity); Potter cannot correctly respond to Victor Zulu. I-corps tells Potter that the best he can do is to abandon camp and get out asap. It is too late to order a bug-out as that would take too long, So, Col. Potter orders everyone to evacuate to an abandoned cave, 1/2 mile away, which the Koreans once used as an aid station.
Hawkeye is uncharacteristically opposed to the new idea (he claims it will be unsafe to move casualties that just came out of OR and that a damp cave with no heaters will be dangerous for the patients) and it becomes apparent he suffers from fear of small spaces: claustrophobia. He ventures inside, but he cannot stay for long. The constant shelling near the cave pushes Hawkeye inside. Houlihan gives Hawkeye company so that he is distracted from the tightness of the cave. Margaret confesses her worst fear: loud noises. She joined the army as a nurse to avoid the real fighting and the noise from the shells and explosions and hence wants the protection of the cave. Winchester fears that one direct hit to the entrance will seal them in the cave forever. His sinuses are acting up in the dampness.
Klinger is the blood bank for Pvt. Lovett (Klinger is hooked directly to Lovett); he tells Lovett that he (Klinger), Chuckles and Father Mulcahy all have the same blood type: one is bluer (Winchester) and one is purer (Mulcahy), than his own. Private Lovett (who is still bleeding from the chest into his belly, its out of control and his blood pressure is dropping) needs surgery that cannot be done in the cave (no lights, no suction, no anesthesia), so Hawkeye and Margaret (she wont send one of her nurses into danger and to face what she fears herself) bring him back to the 4077 OR (Houlihan drives them back), where Hawkeye tries to distract his nurse from hysteria (which is paralyzing her from fear) with a rousing game of "20 Questions." Houlihan thinks of somebody living or dead and Hawkeye has to guess by asking her 20 questions. Q1: Are you Busy Saturday night. Q2. Is it a male or a female (Female). Q3 Living or Dead (Dead). Q4 More than a 100 yrs (yes), 500 (yes). that's when the shelling stops.. silence returns. Hawkeye guesses the Joan of Arc, and is right.
The unit returns the next morning. Hawkeye and Houlihan are asleep in the Post Op and don't have the strength to get up and help
