- To fight an ongoing infection in the O.R. (almost all patients get infected in Post op, and the surgeons determine OR to be the source (Everything in Post Op is sterilized and checked out. All the equipment was checked and doubled checked for germs so that leaves only OR). A further inspection of the OR floor confirms their theory. The gaps between the floorboards are a breeding ground for germs), the staff decides to remove the old wood floor and make a concrete one. Potter is supportive but the army wont pay for it as M in MASH stands for Mobile and a concrete floor cannot be moved (but Hawkeye argues that they haven't moved in the last 5 months). Klinger calls the quartermaster and arranges for cement saying that a 3 star general is visiting MASh next week and they need cement to build a barbecue and a nice little patio. Quartermaster only delivers and dumps, which means that the doctors have to lay the floor themselves.
The surgeons do the menial labor while Klinger acts as foreman (he knows how to mix the cement from working in his uncle's construction business back home); Soon, after a days hard labor, the floor is laid, only to find out that Klinger got the recipe wrong for cement (1 part cement, 4 parts sand, 6 parts gravel, when it was actually 3 parts gravel). Now the entire floor is simply oatmeal instead of cement. Winchester doesn't want to relay the floor and says they should go back to wood (which will take only an hour). But Hawkeye says that decision will only cost a life in the future. The entire crew decides to make a new batch of cement and complete the job. They relay the floor.
while an Italian soldier Ignazio (Joel Brooks) falls head-over-heels for Margaret. He has just received a dear John letter (Dear Giovanni in Italian.. who has left him for a richer man) from his girlfriend back in Italy and cant stand the rejection. Margaret is very understanding and supportive and praises his looks to boost his confidence (he says how is it good to be a Ferrari if you are out of gas). Ignazio believes this to be evidence that Margaret loves him and soon is in love with her. Ignazio tries kissing Houlihan in Post Op but she pulls away citing there are other people there. He goes over to her tent that night. Margaret somehow manages to keep him away (she orders him to his own bed in Post Op) and is only saved when Iganzio is taken back to his unit forcefully.
Just as the floor is relaid in surgery, Ignazio returns from his unit. He has gone AWOL and wants to spend his life with Margaret. In a fit of panic, Margaret claims she cannot be with Ignazio as she loves Winchester. Ignazio confronts Winchester (who is hanging "wet Cement" sign on the door of the OR), and he is so furious that he forgets where he is and walks right into the OR with the wet cement. Bj hands Winchester the travel to fix his mistake and reset the floor before it sets.
The new floor is set and is inaugurated by their patient in OR. its an instant hit.
