After Charles accuses everyone in camp of stealing his newspapers, there is a scene in the mess tent of everyone rebuffing him, up to and including Colonel Potter who says, "Winchester, just a hunch. Will Rogers never met you, did he?" This is a reference to a statement Will Rogers once made, saying, "I never met a man I didn't like."
A newspaper headline reads, "Lie Quits U.N.; To Help Bring Korean Peace." This refers to Trygve Lie, Secretary General of the United Nations from 1 February 1946 until his resignation which he announced on 10 November 1952. American newspapers went to press with this story the next day.
Charles mentions an appointment with Joseph Alsop. He was a newspaper journalist and syndicated columnist from the 1930s through the 1970s. Winchester was looking forward to reading Alsop's column in his newspaper.
In the scene where Major Winchester sits down with his tea to read his newspaper, the song that he is whistling is "Great Gate of Kiev" by Modest Mussorgsky.
Based on the missing newspaper date and the year of Lil Abner and Daisy Mae's marriage this episode takes place around May 5, 1952.
