- Radar O'Reilly is feeling run down, so Hawkeye suggests he treat himself to a relaxing R&R in Tokyo. Unfortunately, en route, Radar gets into a serious accident, landing him in post-op. Hawkeye, feeling he was responsible for Radar's accident, drinks his sorrows away and comes to O.R. the next day so hung over he had to leave and Charles had to replace him. Radar brings this to Hawkeye's attention, causing him to explode and blow his top at O'Reilly, while masking his own self-loathing. Will Radar and Hawkeye make amends, or will their war within a war rage on?—<Explorerds6789>
- The indispensable Company Clerk is down in the mouth and finally, art gets to imitate life. Radar's (Gary Burghoff) grandmother took one look at Uncle Ed's eyes when he returned from WWI France and she could tell he had been a bad boy in France: Grandma cried for 3 days. Radar is sure his mother will take one look at him and laugh for a week (Radar has been nothing but good in Korea so far and wants to be a MAN). He feels he is getting a lot of work, death and destruction from the war, but not much else. He is a good clerk, but he would rather be a hot lover.
Hawkeye has a simple prescription: get a jeep, go to the Pink Pagoda in Seoul and get it done. Radar is worried that he will be the only person to leave the war younger than he came in. Hawkeye asks him to write himself a weekend pass. BJ tells Radar to relax and let things happen by themselves, but Hawkeye pushes him to make them happen for himself. But, Radar's jeep is hit and Hawkeye feels like Judas. He was hit by mortar fire and BJ thinks he might be hit in the chest. Hawkeye operates frenetically on Radar (over-ruling Potter who had suggested that BJ take the case, since Hawkeye didn't look relaxed). The whole unit realizes when Hawkeye says that there was a lot of muscle damage, but his vital organs are OK. Post surgery Hawkeye drinks half the Rosie's bar. Hawkeye believes he almost killed Radar. His hands were shaking while operating on him.
After only 2 hrs of sleep, Hawkeye is dragged into surgery by Winchester for An early A.M. breakfast OR session. This catches Hawkeye off balance (as he didn't have time to detoxify) and he throws up and Winchester has to take over Hawkeye's surgical case, which prompts Potter to ask Hawkeye for an explanation. Hawkeye admits that he screwed up. The next day, his patient catches Hawkeye out of his mind. Hawkeye hasn't met Radar yet in post-op. When Hawkeye finally comes to check on Radar, he yells at Hawkeye for walking out on a patient in the middle of a surgery (and vomiting outside the OR). He says that a lot of people in MASH look up to him and he is not allowed to make mistakes. Hawkeye says he is only human and tells Radar to go to hell.
Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) is so acrimonious, he is prone to violence as he kicks the heater in the swamp. Colonel Potter and Margaret yell at Hawkeye in duet. When Hawkeye tries to apologize to Radar he is given directions on where to go and what to do.
Colonel Potter gives Radar some wise counsel, that time heals all wounds. Hawkeye is the same guy he loved earlier and radar might like him better, now that he knows that Hawkeye is also only human. When Hawkeye and Radar finally speak again, conversation is stilted but Hawkeye manages a sincere apology. When Radar receives jewelry (a purple heart) from President Truman, Hawkeye is there to pin it on his lapel and offer him a salute. Contrary to popular belief, Hawkeye has saluted on dozens of occasions...but this one is definitely merited.
