- Charles falls in love with a French Red Cross woman Martine Le Clerc (Melinda Mullins) (who comes in when the injured soldiers of a French unit are brought to the 4077th) but realizes that their lifestyles are not compatible. Martine is not into Hawkeye at all, who tries hard to hit on her. Martine is really into Winchester (Winchester really likes the French museums) and they talk all night in the officer's club (they talk about art and the meaning of the various impressionist paintings.. they talk about Spike Jones and Tom & Jerry.. They giggle and laugh all night). the next night, Winchester declares his love for Martine and they spend the night together in her tent. Martine admits that she feels very close to Charles. They kiss and have sex
The next day Martine shares that she has had many lovers and even posed nude in a painting for one of them. That nude painting of hers is now hanging at a French cafe. she has never been married and yet was in a live-in relationship with one of her lovers. Winchester starts avoiding Martine and doesn't show up for the next date with her. Martine speaks to Winchester at the swamp and he cries that his family nor he would be able to accept Martine's bohemian past and he asks her to leave. Martine sees Winchester is far too serious and breaks up with a kiss.
Potter treats a North Korean pilot Chong Wha who was shot down and captured. Major Reddish (Jeffrey Tambor) arrives from HQ to take charge of the prisoner. Reddish informs the crew that Chong Wha won a $100K award from Gen Mark Clark (Head of all the US forces in the Far East) for landing one Soviet built jet in good condition on American base and for being the first one to do so ($50K for the jet and $50K for being the first one to do so). Reddish assumes that Chong Wha landed his jet in South Korean territory in response to this award. Chong Wha also gets a free trip to the states and US citizenship. Reddish also says that Clark will use the turncoat story back home to rally support for the war in Korea.
Official interpreter Joon-sung Yu (Soon-Teck Oh) arrives and talks to the Korean PoW. Chong replies that he had engine trouble, thought he was in the north and set down his plane on the first road he saw. Chong Wha would rather be a PoW than travel to the USA, and he has never heard of Mark Clark. Reddish knows that this is a disaster. Reddish tries to bribe Chong-Wha (Simulated Leather Case, Pen and Pencil set, electric razor, and a pinstripe suit with 2 pairs of pants), but BJ and Hawkeye stop him. Hawkeye and BJ are helping with an army PR stunt in their own way. They send Chong Wa to the POW camp and ask Reddish to take Joon-Sung as his North Korean hero, since Joon Sung loves the USA and actually wants to go there. Reddish has no choice but to accept.
