- Hawkeye and BJ are increasingly annoyed at Major One-Up and his mania to prove his alleged automatic superiority at every activity, endeavor or exploit. He claims he has done at least a 100 lobotomies to show up BJ, who has done 50. Mesenteric Arterial Thrombosis, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (which he performed during a power black out), Porta Caval Shunt. He even argues with Hawkeye and BJ that he has the better drinking story. Klinger has a new "protege," Corporal "Boots" Miller (Hamilton Camp), a non-comm who deejays, sings and films with his stirring spoon... and talks to his shoe and sock. Miller gets the attention of everyone at the 4077 who all suspect that he has a screw loose somewhere in his head.
Bad news in 4077 Post Op: there is one box of morphine left until tomorrow when the new supply truck arrives. But, Nurse Kellye has a GI who had a horrible reaction to some of that last batch (or he could be having a raging infection of some kind) and Colonel Potter orders the batch destroyed. Winchester believes it is hasty to destroy the medicine based on a single data point, but Hawkeye and BJ are not willing to risk the life of another patient. They want to test the morphine on Winchester, who refuses. Potter suggests a radical form of treatment in lieu of morphine. Potter tells his doctors to start giving placebos in place of the morphine, this was a trick he had learned from his family doctor Schumaker, back when he was 8 yrs old. Potter says if the doctors and the nurses really sell it, it just might work.
As Miller acts progressively nuttier (he shoots in the night sky claiming that he is aiming at enemy gliders who are out to gather intelligence). Miller tells Klinger he does not want a section 8, he just wants to serve his country. Klinger is the first to tell Col. Potter to give Miller a Section 8 (right then Miller is in the fields interrogating the glider pilots); Potter thinks he is in cahoots with Miller until the enemy glider incident. When Miller repeats his antics in front of Potter, he agrees to discharge Miller Pronto.
In Post Op, everyone but Chuckles is credibly playing his/her part dispensing the old Doc Schumaker/Potter treatment. Winchester is not convinced at all that this will work, but is forced to go along as BJ and Hawkeye wont hear anything against it. Mulcahy tells Winchester to have a little faith. Winchester is stunned to see that after a few minutes the whole post op has gone to sleep. Potter re-iterates that the mind is the best doctor.
In the continuing game of showing up one another, Winchester claims that he once dated Audery Hepburn. He has never seen any of her films, he just had dinner with her. Bj and Hawkeye are angry that Winchester never gives up bragging. Winchester produces a pic to prove his point. Meanwhile Potter receives a sock puppet from the Novolite Toy Company. Turns out Miller started the company after his discharge and sold 50K of these sock puppets to become a rich man. He has the idea for a new toy called the enemy glider.
