- Major Winchester decides to quit talking to everyone at the camp, which Hawkeye and B.J. take as a challenge. Meanwhile, a medic gets amnesia.
- Sgt. Jerry Neilson, Army Medic, with the 5th Regimental Combat Team, is a very frequent visitor to 4077: Jerry is currently bringing a bus load of casualties from Hill 403. Jerry asks to watch a session of OR; the Boston bugle is pouting about Mass. General Hospital. He throws down the gauntlet before his bunk mates: he goes on a "speaking strike." They almost get a rise out of him when Hawkeye accuses his parents of voting for FDR. Another bus full of wounded GIs arrives later in the day and Jerry is on board; unfortunately, Sgt. Neilson is looking at his dog tags while asking Hawkeye and BJ who he is. Col. Potter suggests calling in Major Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) to talk with Jerry. Sidney describes Jerry's amnesia as The Billfold Syndrome: one looks at his wallet and ID but cannot place himself. Sidney gently questions the beleaguered medic, Margaret hovers maternally; Sidney wants to place Jerry under hypnosis and have BJ and Hawkeye provide sound effects to help Jerry relive whatever trauma occurred out in the field. Only then can Sidney and Jerry work to get him well. Chuckles gets a telegram; but, it gets him talking and drinking. Hawkeye and BJ also receive a telegram...from Chicken Little.—LA-Lawyer
- Sgt. Jerry Neilson (Kevin Geer), Army Medic, with the 5th Regimental Combat Team, is a very frequent visitor to 4077: Jerry is currently bringing a bus load of casualties from Hill 403. Jerry asks to watch a session of OR; Jerry is astounded at how much surgery takes to fix up each individual soldier. Jerry wanted to be a doctor, but had to support his family after he graduated high school. Major Winchester is pouting about Mass. General Hospital as due to his continued absence (and no chance of return to Boston in the foreseeable future), his named has been removed as a contender for the head of Thorasic surgery. Even at the swamp, Winchester is livid. His dad donated a whole building to the hospital and an opening like this may not come again for many yrs. He throws down the gauntlet before his bunk mates: he goes on a "speaking strike". He will no longer speak to anyone in the camp and that's just an open invite to BJ and Hawkeye to make him speak up. They try all tricks like interrupting Winchester at meal time. Sitting across from him and passing salt between each other, stopping Charles from eating his food, each time. BJ combs his mustache at lunch. they say, his mother wears combat boots, his father buys suits off the rack, They almost get a rise out of him when Hawkeye accuses his parents of voting for FDR.
Another bus full of wounded GIs arrives later in the day and Jerry is on board; unfortunately, Sgt. Jerry Neilson is looking at his dog tags while asking Hawkeye and BJ who he is. Col. Potter suggests calling in Major Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) to talk with Jerry. Jerry has no external injuries. Sidney describes Jerry's amnesia as The Billfold Syndrome: one looks at his wallet and ID but cannot place himself. Sidney gently questions the beleaguered medic, Margaret hovers maternally; Sidney believes something terrible happened in the field and Jerry decided to deal with it by not dealing with it. Sidney wants to place Jerry under hypnosis and have BJ and Hawkeye provide sound effects to help Jerry relive whatever trauma occurred out in the field.
Only then can Sidney and Jerry work to get him well. It comes out that Jerry lost his own little brother on the battlefield that day. He never got out of the bunker and was killed by enemy mortar. Sidney convinces Jerry to retain his memory as he comes out of the coma and consoles Jerry as he cries his heart out.
Chuckles gets a telegram (BJ and Hawkeye send a fake telegram (They bribed Radar with the Octobers issue of the Nudes Illustrated covering the opening of the women's basketball season) informing Charles that he is back on the list of contenders); but, it gets him talking and drinking. Once BJ and Hawkeye have won, they reveal to Winchester that they wrote the telegram. Hawkeye and BJ also receive a telegram...from Chicken Little. Charles telegram reads "Heads up", as he rigs a wire to the tent mast, and pulls it down by hooking it to a jeep and driving away.
