The General really flipped
kellielulu20 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One thing that stands out for me is how little they used Trapper and Margaret in this episode. This is the type of episode that everyone gets in the act . Why wasn't Margaret trying to impress him ( before they find out how looney he is) . Trapper should have been in on the antics with Hawkeye but he's little more than an extra .

Clearly this was a big part of what frustrated Wayne Rogers . There is one scene where the General ( played by Morgan )wants to move the entire unit ! Even Frank shows some sense here and knows when it's safer not to be too by the book. The General nearly gets himself, Henry and Frank killed.

How off the General is finally revealed for everyone to see and it ends all his pointless changes.

Good episode but I would have preferred more of Margaret and Trapper . Hawkeye , Blake and Frank get most of the General's attention and criticism.

The Appearance of Harry Morgan
Hitchcoc4 March 2015
General Bartford Hamilton Steele arrives. He is played by Harry Morgan who will later return as Colonel Potter. He is a gung-ho character with a couple of screws loose who begins to terrorize the entire camp. He is a racist. Unfortunately, the antics that usually go over well are circumvented, and soon Hawkeye has gotten himself in trouble. One day the General decides the entire MASH unit has to move so they can be closer to the front. Of course, Hawkeye and Trapper put it upon themselves to get rid of the guy. Hawkeye is charged with insubordination and put before a tribunal. A black helicopter pilot becomes a key witness. This is the first episode of the third season but it comes up a bit short.

Harry Morgan's audition
robrosenberger3 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
A joy to behold. Every cylinder fires, starting with Hawkeye, who runs afoul of a visiting general, the highly-honored, ultra-strict, and by-the-way loony Bartford Hamilton Steele (Harry Morgan, in television's greatest "can he join this cast" moment ever). Steele has Henry sterilize tongue depressors, and prepare the camp to be "mobile". Inspecting the troops, he thinks Klinger is his wife. Steele court-martials Hawkeye for pretending to be a civilian reporter, but it falls apart when he breaks into a negro work song. Lynette Mettey is drippingly good as Hawk's romance, Nurse Baker. Teddy Wilson (THAT'S MY MAMA) is spot-on as a chopper pilot. Ain't it great to beat your feet...

Harry Morgan
safenoe16 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Teddy Wilson, who guest starred in The General Flipped at Dawn, sadly passed away at an early age. As for The General Flipped at Dawn, this was in some ways considered an audition for Harry Morgan to replace McLean Stevenson, but was it really, because had Stevenson telegraphed to the producers that he wanted out, maybe. The M*A*S*H Matters podcast, hosted by superfan Ryan Patrick and Jeff Maxwell, who started playing Igor in season two, talk about this often, and get to the heart of McLean's motivations for leaving and his subsequent regrets, because he learned that fans were drawn to Colonel Blake much more and of course once Stevenson left M*A*S*H he was no longer Colonel Blake.

Stupid episode
unclemc-957102 November 2023
I've never been a fan of the slapstick episodes of MASH and this is worse than most.

It is best described as Henry Morgan's audition for the role of Colonel Potter which he eventually won.

Trapper and Margaret barely appear. It's really all about Harry doing stupid/silly/dangerous things - as well as being a rude, racist jerk.

I don't recall of Father Mulcahy appears at all.

If you enjoy laughing at people doing nonsensical things then you will like this. If you find the Three Stooges funny, you'll like this.

I don't like either and I didn't like this episode. In my book it's just plain stupid.
