Winchester on Tape
Hitchcoc28 March 2015
This episode is Charles Emerson Winchester's chance to let the folks back home know what is going on at the 4077th. He tells of the usual shenanigans, using a tape recorder instead of writing (a rich guys way of corresponding in the 50's). Hawkeye talks him into taking his duty (even though the war keeps getting in the way of his fun in Seoul), Klinger tries fainting as an out, Margaret tries some moves on him, and B.J. initiates a practical joke, making him first think he is losing weight and then gaining it. He does this by exchanging his uniforms for others of different sizes. There is no shortage of wounded coming in. Klnger manages to get Hawkeye a Jeep, but this leads to an ending that shows how sad their situation is at times.

Unusually Entertaining!!

Major Winchester used his tape recorder to tell his family what life has been like at the 4077th. Colonel Potter did a painting of Major Winchester in his office. He griped about the deplorable surroundings at his outfit. He demanded Colonel Potter to have him sent back to Tokyo to finish his work as a surgeon; no such luck would occur in his camp as commanding officer. He told his father -- over his tape recording -- to contact Senator Griswold in having him sent home to Boston.

Captain Hunnicutt's wife sent him a gift package from their home in Mill Valley, California. He found out the cake tasted better than it actually looked in the container. Captains Pierce and Hunnicutt loaded Major Winchester's tray with a ton of food. They later headed back to "The Swamp." From there, they switched his regular pants with ones that were much smaller in size. Major Winchester would eventually be hopping outside the camp for a round of exercise.

Captain Pierce would be looking forward to meet a nurse in Seoul for rest and recuperation. He would fall asleep in the tent as Corporal Klinger sent him a jeep ... all after a long session in surgery. Major Winchester would act in obvious haste -- in his recording to his parents -- of his conditions at the 4077th ... thus demanding a transfer to Boston. The end result: A Fat 9.2!! Enjoy!!

A sad ending

Warning: Spoilers
I still think about the ending of this episode, where Hawkeye is so tired from surgery that he falls asleep when his jeep arrives to take him to Seoul for a three day tryst with a former flame. Why did Klinger fail to make a determined effort to wake up Hawkeye? Hawkeye could have slept in the jeep. What happened when Hawkeye woke up? Did he get angry at Klinger for missing out on three days of passion with a former flame?
