- It's time for the annual 4077th Halloween party. Hawkeye is dressed as Superman, B.J. is a clown, Margaret is a geisha girl, Colonel Potter is a cowboy and Klinger (Jamie Farr) is Al Capone. Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) doesn't believe in Halloween and everyone tells their own harrowing "unexplained" experiences, which Winchester chalks to "coincidence" Hawkeye talks about his uncle, who was lost at sea on a foggy night. He found a boat, Luck of the Irish, and followed it into port, safely. The Luck of Irish sails back out to sea. The next morning, the port master tells his uncle that the boat "Luck of The Irish" had sunk 20 yrs ago.
Charles tries to help a slovenly marine Pvt Musconi who has a billiard ball stuck in his mouth (he bet his colleagues that he could get a pool ball inside his mouth and take it out); Winchester has some fun with Musconi for wasting his time (he suggests to pull all of his teeth out to get the ball out) and then gives him a muscle relaxant to get the ball out. The marines were having a rowdy party next door at Rosie's..
But it's not much of a party for the surgeons when unexpected, wounded guests show up; The volume is very high with a mix of major and minor injuries. The marines keep sending more wounded from Rosie's (a private got into a backward jeep race and backed over a chicken coop and smashed his head, one corporal broke his hand when he stuck it into an electric fan on a bet)
Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) inadvertently saves a man's life when he is presumed dead (he has his medical tags on his toe fingers, which indicates dead man, while live men have medical tags tied to the hands). Nobody gives a second look at the body and it is covered with white sheet. Potter signs a form handing the body off to the clearance team. Mulcahy administers the last rites and finds a tear streaking down his cheeks, indicating he is alive.
Hawkeye treats a soldier who has a shoulder injury and suffers from malnutrition. During surgery Hawkeye finds that the soldier has really low electrolytes and is about 20 pounds underweight. Even in post-op, the soldier wont eat anything and refuses to respond to anyone.. when Hawkeye talks to him, he recounts how his buddies got killed in an artillery burst at the front while he stood in the chow line for seconds (it was a special thanksgiving dinner for their unit that their CO had organized for repelling a Chinese push). He was sharing the foxhole with them moments ago. He cant even look at food since then. Hawkeye hands him off to Sidney for Psych evaluation.. Hawkeye says nobody forgets what happened, they only learn how to live with it.
At night, BJ (Mike Farrell) and Hawkeye scare the pants off Winchester by moving his overhead lamp in the tent via a string through the tent, and making it look like it was possessed
