A light hearted instalment
DVD_Connoisseur30 September 2018
"The Ugliest Dog" is a light-hearted affair after the more serious tone of the previous episode.

We see two of the most incompetent goons ever in a Magnum series, accompanying their boss (played by a very shouty Michael V. Gazzo) who is determined to kidnap an heiress' dog.

Shawn Hoskins plays the very cute Sharon and her performance adds to the comic air of this tale.

This episode is the first in the series to contain the famous "Magnum" theme, although the opening credits are still accompanied by the far less exciting and easily forgotten original theme.

7 out of 10. Good hearted.

This episode was really funny - I enjoyed it. Come on people - lighten up - this is not brain surgery - or high drama - its comedy.

Doggone it, I liked it...

Warning: Spoilers
Magnum plays dogwatcher for "Algie," short for Sir Algernon Farnsworth, a lovable little mutt who needs protection from gangsters. "If that dog is worth something, it has to be intrinstic to the dog itself," says Higgins. Algie, it turns out, is every thing he needs to be.

There is a funny story line involving a stereotypical old school gangster and his two ivy league-educated but incompetent sons, and their pretty hilarious attempts at dognapping.

Then there is the woman charged to watch Algie who is deathly afraid of dogs and really wants to be a marine biologist. At one point in the dog chase they end up in a very cool banana patch and stumble across a guerrilla pot farm and a couple of brudahs armed with shotguns. There is a shoot out between the gangsters and the pot farmers. For this scene alone this episode is worth watching.

I don't think it's ever revealed what it was that made Algie so special. If it was I missed it. I like that and every thing else about this episode. It's a fun romp with a dog named Algie who is cute, not ugly.

it's all about numbers

==> WARNING Spoiler Alert : the message below gives away an important plot point !

@Jon-nel "I don't think it's ever revealed what it was that made Algie so special."

It surprised me as well , that during the episode , hardly any information was given *why* they were chasing the dog !

But at the very end they shortly explain that the dog has the call number to a coded Swiss bank account tattooed on his body . There's 4 million dollar on that account , and anyone with that number can get into that account . No names or signature are required .

And I agree with you : the dog is cute and certainly not ugly .

Warning: Spoilers
The Ugliest Dog in Hawaii is Magnum P I humor episode. There is comic mob guys with the old ranting on the younger. A cute mutt, and mutt nappers. Magnum has to do a favor again for Robbin, which is to body guard a dog, which turns into and investigation. Magnum does a few smooth movie with a good plot twist. 7 stars.

Doggy

Warning: Spoilers
Here Magnum looks after a dog that a trio of old-style crooks want to get their hands on. This is a major departure from the previous episode, Never Again, Never Again, where Magnum and Co were up against a couple of Third Reichers posing as Jews believe it or not.

Anyway, this episode is light-hearted, and that's fine after Never Again, Never Again.

One thing I learned is that Shirley Rogers played the snorkeling lady in the opening credits of Magnum.

The original theme still plays for the opening credits, with the music being a cross of CHiPs and The Love Boat. It's quite a jazzy theme that embodied the 70s.

Worst episode of a great series
wardkaiser1 April 2022
Very thin plot. A bit clownish. It's like the series and the characters haven't found their stride yet. Tom Selleck is fine. The old yelling guy is awful. Fortunately this episode is an aberration. By far the worst of an otherwise great series.

Worst Magnum PI Ever
LumpyMusic20 February 2016
This single episode is the worst of the entire series for one reason. The old gangster character, played by actor Michael Gazzo, annoyingly SCREAMS and SHOUTS during the entire episode. It's not just unneeded for the plot, it's physically annoying to have to listen to that gravely, shouting voice for the entire show.

The girl's probably the least glamorous of all the Magnum fem stars.

The one way antagonism from Higgins toward Magnum is still pretty beyond reasonable. It's beginning to ease. In the previous episode it was a little less strong. But the characters generally haven't found their individual niche parts in the show. TC's still overweight. Magnum still walks like he's doing the Tango. It'll resolve later in the series, I hope!

What were they thinking
asarandes1 October 2019
The bimbo magnum is forced to drag around while keeping the dog safe is so freaking annoying. She is dumber than a box of rocks. Why, why do they cast such idiots? And the bad guy with the nonstop screaming. Ugh. It was so hard to finish this episode.

if not for the dog, this ep was the pits
MiketheWhistle4 March 2020
I liked the premise for the show, as the dog was cute and entertaining.

The problem is that the waterfront chase scene was absolutely horrible. It was so bad that it ruined the ep. Had the 5-10 minutes been changed or better this would have been a much better ep.

My least favorite Magnum
chlump28 October 2019
Gangster that never stops yelling. A chase that goes on and on and on and never ends with no additional plot and character development. All the characters are implausibly incompetent. Oh, did I mention the yelling gravelly voiced old man? Enough said...
