Warning: Spoilers
Maigret Goes to School was titled The Liars in the 1960s BBC version. I think it was also the better version despite this having grander production values.

A village postmistress in a small fishing village near La Rochelle has been shot dead. The bullet went right through her eye as she looked out from her window.

The postmistress was a poisonous woman who spread gossip gleaned from reading the letters.

The main suspect is schoolteacher Joseph Gastin. Knowing he is about to be arrested, he hotfoots it to Paris and requests Maigret's help.

There is little evidence connecting Gastin to the murder but then local police is adamant that he has the right suspect.

Gastin was an outsider in a village that does not like outsiders. His wife also once had an affair, maybe that was a motive for killing the postmistress.

Maigret sets about unearthing some deep secrets, eyewitnesses who are schoolchildren and find some fresh oysters to eat.

I found this to be rather flat and leisurely paced. Maybe it needed flashbacks as to how despicable the victim was. It needed to draw out some of the characters more sharply.
