Perfect casting of Vernette
vitoscotti12 March 2023
Ironically the story starts out with Thelma reading about a psychic reader. Vicky Lawrence was a regular on late night infomercials plugging psychic readers during that time period. Episode tugs at your heartstrings with the awkward situation poor Vernette (Penelope Sudrow) is put into. Some fine acting on her part. Karen Lynn Scott as Wanda Lynn Mahoney plays the beautiful self absorbed arrogant part to the hilt overacting as Bubba's girlfriend. Funniest scenes are Vernette's ridiculous prom dress and Mama Thelma Harper (Vicki Lawrence) pulling Iola (Beverly Archer) from the living room into the kitchen by her camera that's around her neck.

Bubba (Allen Kayser) eventually making the right moral decision is a recurrent theme that always seems to work well. Episode not a let down after the two stellar Hawaiian ones.

Why do they do this?
Sylviastel3 September 2008
I don't know why they didn't do the senior prom episode before Bubba's graduation. Regardless, this show seems to have some episodes that go out of order and this is one of them. Iola's niece, Vernette, is visiting Raytown for the week and their painting the town red. Bubba tries talking to her but he gets mostly silence. Vernette has a crush on Bubba and it's obvious. When his original prom date cancels out on him, Bubba is in a fine mess. Thelma and Iola get an idea of having Vernette be Bubba's date for the prom. They get her dressed and treat her like Cinderella. Then when Bubba's date decides to go with him, he has a problem with two dates. Vernette who is pleasant, nice, shy, and attractive in her way while Bubba's date is utterly sexual but undesirable as she cares for nobody but herself.
