Victor Abledog is the callsign for Room 17, as in Confidential Report (1965). Huston's is Pocahontas.
Referenced by Hardacre and Kumano, the Leopard Society - members of the Anyoto tribe - was genuinely a West African secret society in operation around 1890 to 1948. They wore leopard skins with razor-sharp weapons in the teeth and claws to kill their enemies. These cultists were said to believe in a magical elixir, borfima, brewed from boiling their prey's intestines, which supposedly endowed them with superhuman powers and the ability to physically transform into leopards. Rumours persist that the Society is still covertly active.
The edition opens on Thursday 11th February and concludes on Monday 15th February, dating events to 1965.
There are twelve phone lines into the windowless Room 17.
"Depend upon it, Sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully" is, as Dimmock notes, a quote from Dr Samuel Johnson.
