Everybody seems to be looking for Turner...
planktonrules16 April 2017
Some folks come to Mannix and claim they are looking for their son, Turner. The lady describes her son as sort of a delightful scamp...but soon several things become obvious. First, the federal government is looking for him because he's a counterfeiter AND so are lots of criminals..who seem more than willing to kill Mannix as well! And, Mannix begins to even question whether or not these people are related to Turner...or if they just want him to find the guy so they can kill him! All in all, a rather exciting show with a rather strange man, as Turner isn't exactly what most folks would think of when they hear about counterfeiters. Worth seeing.

Stop me if you've heard this one, Mannix has clients who lie to him and...

Warning: Spoilers
As often happens on this series, Joe's clients hire him with a cover story of lies and Joe uncovers the lies and gets them in the end. Yet, bad clients keep hiring him. You would think word would get around. Joe is supposedly searching for a lost son, Turner Dabney, while he is actually helping a gang chase down a counterfeiter with a great process for making fake money. The lies break down fast when Joe runs into a treasury agent outside a bar. He briefly uses judo in a fight. Rare event. He also uses a informant named Herbie who may be the best informer ever on Mannix. In addition, an answer to Joe's classified ad gets him the true information on Turner Dabney from an old actress who knew Dabney. The actress is a key player down the line. Joe works his way through the clues and ends up with Turner Dabney in a glider "dogfighting" the bad guys in a Beechcraft. One of the few episodes with police but no Lieutenant Malcolm. The police actually show up to get Joe out of a jam at the end. Peggy works her phone magic throughout this episode

Stray thoughts. What are the odds a classified ad pays off as quickly as it does here? Why didn't the bad guys shoot Joe when they pull up in the convertible behind him? They just grab their friend and run. A glider chase in this episode and a dune buggy chase a few episodes back. After eight years, the show has to do something different than car chases. How do the bad guys know Turner Dabney is in that particular glider? What does tossing the plates accomplish?

Good cast without the standard guest star regulars. Elisha Cook Jr as the stoolie is really good. The guy is a good actor and would have been great in this role as a semi-regular. He'll do that on Magnum PI in a few years. Russell Johnson as a bad guy - say it ain't so! I thought Scatman Crothers would have a bigger role but it didn't happen.

Joe doesn't get paid, yet again. Maybe the treasury people were offering a reward. Still a decent hour and worth viewing.

I took this down one star only because -- Joe's clients again are big, fat liars! Mannix is supposed to be looking for someone's son, although the lost bohemian turns out to be a clever con who just swiped a counterfeit gang's plates.

Joe naturally gets put on the top of the hit list as these goons want their money makers back, naturally believing he's part of the plan. The clever twist here is that the lost son may just be an angle to sucker Joe into the chase. Very clever. As one reviewer noted, and it is rare, Mannix gets to pull off some judo on one of the creeps. This may have been inspired by CANNON, who was always quick to chop a bum across the back and neck.

Series regular director Reza Badiya, returns(!) for Season 8, with a flair for black eyes, broken bones and lots of ammo. For all of us spot the famous face fans, there's a terrific list; Scatman Carothers, and Russell Johnson (GILLIGANS ISLAND), as a guy named Brasher?

Two seasoned veterans are also on board; Anna Lee (THE PRIZE, 1963) who always reminded me of Angela Lansbury, playing the atypical worried mother! And everyone's favorite fall guy Elisha Cook, Jr, who should have been on the series more often. A fantastic way to spend a late night. SEASON 8 Episode 5. CBS dvd box set.
