Yet another exciting installment of "Mannix".
planktonrules10 May 2013
Jill Ireland, Nick Colasanto (much heavier), Hugh Beaumont Herb Alpert music at 37 minutes? bullfight lady interesting use of forensics

During the introduction to the show "Mannix", you see lots of clips from various episodes. Some show his driving race cars and finally you hear a mention of this hobby in this particular show. The show begins with a man getting killed in a race in which Mannix is participating. The grieving widow, however, thinks something hinky is happening--and the death was NOT an accident. When Mannix digs deeper, he learns that the dead man worked on a secret government project AND he had a lady friend on the side who kept taking trips to Mexico. What gives? Well, the trail leads to espionage and a secret--a really big secret.

This episode has some interesting guest appearances. One, Nick Colasanto, is interesting because Colasanto looked VERY different from his later appearances as 'Coach' on "Cheers". He's MUCH heavier and the weight loss could have been due to his heart problems that killed him partway through the series. Also, you'll see Hugh Beaumont (of "Leave it to Beaver" fame) and Jill Ireland as the grieving widow. Another possible cameo is the use of what sounded like some Herb Alpert music at the 37th minute of the show.

So is it any good? Of course. Although I've only seen the first season and part of the second, every episode seems very well written, is full of nice action and are all very enjoyable. This one is quite exciting and the plot has some nice twists. All in all, a very worthy addition to the series.

Great episode. Gorgeous girls.

Jill Ireland, Sallie Sachse and Emily Banks all melt the screen. Wish they had more time. The scene with Emily Banks in the bar is great. The look on Mannix face indicates surprise when she takes the cigarette from Mannix, lights it herself and returns it back to his mouth. She seems to enjoy the improv. This was a fun episode. He had beautiful co stars on his show.

Warning: Spoilers
A fellow driver is killed in a race that Joe is in. His wife, Ellen Kovac (Jill Ireland) comes to Joe to investigate it as she thinks it is murder. Joe doubts it but makes some inquiries. Joe gets his mechanic friend Mac Wagner (Nicholas Colasanto) to look at the wrecked car. Joe ends up at the husband's company and suspects abound. There is the company lawyer (Peter Haskell) who wanted to marry Ellen. There is the dead man's assistant named Harper who is nowhere to be found although he was at the race. There is the secretary Barbara West (Emily Bank) who liked the husband a lot. Turns out the husband Ed Kovak (Jed Allan) had a girlfriend Maureen (Sabrina Scharf) who went to Mexico regularly. Hugh Beaumont is a shadowy figure who tracks Mannix but doesn't talk to him. Kovac's company tells Joe that Ellen Kovac is terminating him and tries to pay him off but Joe is not letting go of that bone. The girlfriend Maureen is killed and Joe meets Hugh who is working for some govt agency. Hugh warns Joe off but it isn't happening but does tell him the assistant Harper is a govt agent. Joe sticks with the case because he's Joe! He, Mac and some TV guys go over the film of the race and Joe realizes there was a switch of drivers. Ed Kovac didn't die and he is the bad guy. Joe and Mac find out the wife Ellen is flying her husband out of the country and go to intercept. In the climax, it is a nice twist that Mac gets to shoot the bad guy. Ellen was not in on anything but just loved her husband. The husband realized the feds were closing in and killed Harper and put him in the racing car to end up in the crash. He killed the girlfriend as a loose end.

Good cast. Jill Ireland with her good looks and accent is a nice addition. She was gone much too soon. Sabrina Scharf is Kirk's Native American wife in a Star Trek episode. Nick Colasanto has more on the ball here than he will in Cheers. Joe Mantell is making his first appearance as Albie. He is great. William Fawcett is the janitor. He made multiple appearances on every long running western back then. Hugh Beaumont brings a certain gravitas to ever role he does.

Two minor complaints. The race car explodes in midair for no good reason. I realize all the shows did that for dramatic effect and this one is very good but at least let the car hit the ground first. The second thing is Joe makes another patented Mannix pistol shot by shooting a tire on a plane taxiing by him as he passes in a speeding refueling truck. Joe makes multiple wonder shots in this series but this one is right up there.

Joe gets wounded by gunshot yet again. He is going to race again soon so it's just a flesh wound. He's had worse. He does get paid. It's all good. See this episode. It is one of the best.

Great episode, one of the best

This is an outstanding episode. There are lots of twists and turns to the plot, and there is interesting detective work. We get three beautiful guest actresses in this episode! Jill Ireland, Sabrina Scharf, and Emily Banks.

It's a lot of fun to see a TV show that has such a well-written, carefully thought out script as we get here. And of course, our Joe Mannix is a wonderfully warm, likeable man! And also a tough and determined one. That combination of qualities gives the show tremendous appeal.

To sum up, this is very, very impressive episode.

BEFORE YOU RACE, CHECK YOUR LIFE INSURANCE!

This is the episode used for parts of the opening of MANNIX and its terrific. It also shows how far in advance they filmed episodes, as this one had a release date in October, but probably filmed in the summer.

What a stellar cast. Jill Ireland hires Joe to find out just who killed her race car driver husband. His car is the one going over a cliff and explodes. We all remember that one. It turns out he was involved in some top secret government work (of course, the writers really being creative here) and that lead to his demise.

Ireland, married to Charles Bronson, was quite popular on tv while also appearing in her husband's films. Prior to this episode she appeared in several episodes of the MAN FROM UNCLE and the western series SHANE.

Hugh Beaumont (dad on LEAVE IT TO BEAVER), a little grayer, plays Frank Abbott, who is also working on the case and bumps into Joe to compare notes. Beaumont began his film career in the 1940s, and starring as MICHAEL SHAYNE in a string of popular B detective films. The producers liked him, and he would appear a few more times, particularly in one of the most famous episodes where Mannix is slowly poisoned. I think had he not retired (he owned a lot of property in Minnesota), Hugh Beaumont would have been considered for the role of Art Malcolm, later played by Ward Wood, as he fit the detective mold.

Nick Colasanto plays Wagner, who later gained tv stardom as the coach on CHEERS. And not to forget Peter Haskell (as Hal), everybody's favorite good guy slash bad guy.

This story has everything, tag it Classic Mannix --and wait for the ending... Well directed by Sutton Roley, behind some of the best adventure shows on tv, such as COMBAT and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

They picked the right guy here.

A salute to William Fawcett, who has a small role as a janitor. Fawcett was a staple in westerns for decades, appearing many times on GUNSMOKE and the VIRGINIAN. He was one of the few actors who actually had a Phd in acting and was originally an acting teacher. Super trivia question, if you are taking notes.

For 60s music fans, listen for Herb Alpert, about mid-way through the episode. He had his first No. 1 hit a few months earlier with THIS GUYS IN LOVE WITH YOU, which he also sang. Good PR for Herb at the time.

There are no notes as to where the car races were filmed, though the series through the years filmed at many tracks across California, also up near San Francisco.

Recommended on so many levels. SEASON 2 EPISODE 4 remastered CBS dvd box set.
