MAYNARD AND THE TOP SECRET FORMULA?
tcchelsey19 March 2024
10 Stars! A gas!

Creative writing 101 once again on the part of Bud Nye. Most definitely, the later series episodes had possibilities of going in far different directions, and this is the perfect example.

Dobie, Herb and his mom are off to Washington, D. C. for a sightseeing trip --and Maynard tags along. They have no choice but to take him because if they don't he's going to KILL himself!

Are you ready? Enter beautiful secret spy Veronica (played to the max by Barbara Bain!) who mistakes Maynard for DR. HENRY FAHRENHEIT??? -- inventor of a secret rocket fuel formula. What follows is some classic comedy and superb acting on everyone's part. Watch for the hidden microphones all over the place!

In turn, federal agents want Maynard to trap Veronica and her sinister accomplice Bruno (played by Henry Corden). There's more! John Banner (HOGANS HEROES) plays the chief, and in a surprisingly good role. All this kooky stuff may have inspired GET SMART a few years later, it is spot on.

Great to see Barbara Bain, a few years before stardom on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, and in a similar type of performance. At the time she was cast in various dramatic shows, the latest being HAWAIIN EYE. She followed this with an appearance on 77 SUNSET STRIP. Corden makes a cool villain, of course best known as the "second" voice of FRED FLINTSTONE.

A top Maynard episode. SEASON 4 EPISODE 32 remastered.
