- Thalia wants Dobie to go to Willoughby Hall, an exclusive eastern school, and befriend the sons of wealthy bankers (an idea that also captures Mr. Gillis' fancy in a dream sequence). All Dobie wants is Thalia's love, but to win her heart he must get a 100 on his math test. To what depth will he sink for love?—Gary R. Peterson
- Despite he by far not being her best student, Mrs. Adams, Dobie's math teacher, wants to help Dobie reach his full potential since he truly has a good heart, as demonstrated by the fact that both Thalia and Maynard love him as a friend. Indeed, Thalia admits as much, despite always giving him back his class pin because she still can't marry him due to his poor financial status. To help Dobie reach that potential, Thalia wants him to enroll in Willoughby Hall, an eastern prep school. Thalia believes that because he is so lovable, he can't help but ingratiate himself into the good graces of whoever his wealthy Willoughby roommate, whose wealthy father will give Dobie the world. Thalia even convinces Mr. Gillis. But Dobie doesn't want to go to Willoughby since he doesn't want to leave Thalia. To reach that financial security, Dobie believes another way is to become a good student. He convinces Thalia that if he can get 100% on the next math quiz, he doesn't need to go to Willoughby Hall. He thinks that fate has leant him a big hand when he goes to talk to Mrs. Adams about extra tutoring for the quiz. But the outcome of that fate may place Dobie and Mrs. Adams' friendship on shaky ground.—Huggo
