Just a Little Dull I'm Afraid
Hitchcoc7 February 2017
Mary finds out that her dad, a surgeon, has announced his retirement. It seems that he and Mary's mother, Nanette Fabray, have decided to move to Minneapolis. Not only that, but they find an apartment just around the corner from Mary's place. Mary suddenly becomes a little girl again and her parents are into every aspect of her life. She, of course, has become a modern woman, and when she doesn't get home from a date until 8:00 a.m. she is accosted by her father and mother. Her mother even gets Phyllis to have a key made for her. There's just something sort of tiresome about the two of them. This is terrible to say, but I always thought that Nanette Fabray's face looked really flat, like she had run into a wall. Just saying.

Take it or leave it

This is a so-so episode. Mary's parents appear in Minnesota and move into a house very close to Mary's house in Minneapolis. The Mom is Nanette Fabray,a capable and accomplished actress that does a good job in this episode. Mary's father is Bill Quinn,a veteran actor that is probably most famous for being the bartender on 'the Rifleman' tv series in the late 1950's. These two that portray Mary's parents make a reasonably believable married couple on the show.

The individual actors and actresses do a decent job,it is at least obvious that they are putting some effort into this. The trouble with the show is that the story itself isn't very interesting.

The story is that Mary's parents are watching her like a hawk and cramping her style. That is pretty much the whole gist of the episode, for better or worse. This episode has it's moments,it isn't completely without entertainment value-it is just a bit weak and slow.

See what you think, don't take my word for it.

Kind of awkward

The series often did well with exploring awkward social foibles and depicting (usually) Mary's attempts to navigate embarrassing situations.

This happens here when her father suddenly retires, and the parents move to Minneapolis - just around the corner from Mary's in fact. Soon they are watching Mary's every move and wanting to know where she's going, when she'll be home.

The parents are kind of annoying. Dottie (Nanette Fabray) can't stop with the 'people think Mary and I are sisters' angle and Walter (Bill Quinn) is a neat freak but never satisfied. (Rhoda's mother was annoying too, but funnier.)

Mary is seen returning from her date at 8.27 am the next day.

Great Episode for taking a nap

All I'm gonna say is the man who plays Mary's father is the most boring actor I've ever seen. This had potential to be a good plot but her parents are incredibly boring. I also notice mary and her parents never say I love you to each other which is really sad
