- TriviaThe only possible personal relationship Mary would ever have with one of her co-workers. During initial planning of the series, Mary was supposed to have possibly had a relationship with Ted Baxter; this was prior to Ted Knight's hiring. This idea was quickly nixed, and the impetus for this episode was not that a relationship between Mary and Lou would ever have come to (long term) fruition, but as a 'what if', similar to Mary's Three Husbands (1977), which had preceded this.

Two Beautiful Souls
Mary is fed up with two thousand dates, many of which have been a waste of time. She has another one where the guy takes off his shirt, expecting things from her on the first date. She throws him out. She is frustrated. Back int he office, Georgette tells her she should ask Lou out. She tells her that he has all the qualities of a person she could get to like a lot, socially. They are both like little kids when the time comes. Lou brings her three bouquets of flowers, candy, a bottle of wine, and some mixed nuts. There are more uncomfortable moments than they know what to do with. Maybe, the fact that they are so nice and so pleasant and so scared is such a compliment. This is a really nice episode.
