Maude's raising funds for the local library so she puts on a production of "Sugar Babies" six years before it opened on Broadway. That musical, as well as the play "The Nance", utilized the "Meet Me Around the Corner" sketch which is presented here with Adrienne Barbeau really shaking it to Walter's lecherous ogler. Arthur Harmon (Conrad Bain) utilizes his power as a member of the school board to protest what he considers filthy.
This is a great opportunity for the theatrical trained cast with Barbeau then on Broadway as Rizzo in "Grease" and Bea Arthur preparing to repeat her role as Vera in the ill-fated movie version of "Mame". Bea gets to sing the entire version of "Hard Hearted Hannah" which she sang in a greatly edited form on "Golden Girls". Outside of Bain's attempt for censorship, there's nothing here dealing with social issues.
Another attempt for some relevance has Florida and Maude doing "Me and My Shadow" which has them questioning the positioning of who the shadow is, resulting in a very funny line by Esther Rolle. Veteran character actor Phil Leeds who appeared in practically every sitcom ever, plays the school principal, and is adorable as always. It takes a little emotional blackmail for Maude to get the show to go on, but it works! This may not be "Broadway goes to Tuckahoe", but it's a very enjoyable episode.
