A Departure From the Usual
jstorm-5259410 December 2023
Most common among the criticisms of this program is that it devolved quickly into a routine story, week after week, with Captain Binghamton scheming against McHale and his crew.

Whether those criticisms are valid or not is debatable, but in either case, this title represents a change of pace. In this episode, Radioman WIllie Moss is in hot water after making a mistake on a communique because he is suffering from a broken heart.

Binghamton is angry after being chewed out by higher ups for the mistake and looks to ship Moss out in retaliation. Naturally McHale, wanting to protect his man and keep his crew together, concocts a kind of therapy to snap Willie out of it before Binghamton's plan comes to fruition. There are plenty of laughs along the way and fans of the show should be pleased with the finished product.

An overplayed southern comedy sketch.

In this episode we get all the antics of southern life when Willy's girlfriend, Effie May, marries another man. Now Tennessee bred Willy is down in the dumps to the point of being transferred for neglect of duty. When a new nurse, Cindy Bates, gets transferred onto the base, she has all the phony accent of a southern woman to hopefully bring around Willy. Well that is McHale's plan.

McHale wants to make Willy and Cindy feel right at home in the hills of Tennessee, so he puts a plan where all the gang and nurses will dress up like country hillbillies and sashay around making the couple feel right at home. Perhaps this can get Willy's mind off Effie May.

But McHale's plan may lead him into hot water. A congressman is coming to the base with a Navy appropriation's officer to inspect the base. The congressman arrives about the time the shindig begins.

The story was nice but to see the cast run around looking like something from a 'Bugs Bunny' cartoon just did not set well. We all know that this is a comedy sitcom that pokes fun at all things on the spectrum but at least pick a southern woman instead of someone that lampoons the sounds of a nice southern drawl. This was hard to watch more for the cast than the story.
