Miami Undercover – Bet Your Life – 1961
Miami Undercover was a Private Investigator series set in Miami Florida. Lee Bowman headlines as a P.I. who works for the Miami Hotel owner's association. His right hand is Rocky Graziano (The middle-weight boxing champ 1948-49) Also in the cast is Hugh Lawrence as Bowman's Police contact. The series ran for 38 episodes during 1961. This particular episode is the 5th of the production run.
Bowman is approached by pretty Suzanne Lloyd with an offer for some employment. She offers 10 large for just two days work. 10 grand is 10 grand and of course Bowman is interested, as long as murder etc is not the job. Lloyd however fails to mention exactly what the job is. She invites him to a fancy beach front villa where all will be explained.
Bowman shows at the appointed time, Miss Lloyd introduces Bowman to George Neise. Bowman recognizes Neise as a wealthy business type who is out on bail. The man had been charged over a business swindle. Bowman wants nothing to do with the man as he is sure the deal must be crooked. Lloyd however talks him into staying and listening to the offer.
Neise would like Bowman to sell some South American bonds worth four and half million for him. Neise does not wish to pay broker fees. The deal is worth 10 grand cash for Bowman's help. Neise swears the deal is on the up and up and perfectly legal. Bowman agrees to the deal after he checks out that the bonds are indeed real.
What Bowman does not know is that the bond sale is simply a ruse. Neise and some South American types are planning on killing the President of said South American country. The target is in Miami for a big conference. The bonds will plummet in value after the assassination bankrupting the country. This will allow Neise's group to take over.
Needless to say our boy Bowman tumbles to the plan. He gets on the horn and sends Graziano to protect the threatened leader. Bowman meanwhile is nearly killed by the nasty types. The Police however, led by Lt Lawrence do the nick of time bit. Neise buys the big one and Miss Lloyd is gobbled up for a long visit on the State's dime.
Okay, but not really anything special. The director was Howard W. Koch. Koch, along with Aubrey Schenck produced low budget fare in the 1950's. They made a name by supplying well-made, low cost films for the bottom half of drive-in double bills etc. Koch directed several of these better than average films. Examples of which would be, the noir, THE LAST MILE, VIOLENT ROAD, BIG HOUSE USA and SHIELD FOR MURDER.
