- Nine years after Bohemian magician Ferdy Viller's alleged suicide, his family reunites for Christmas dinner hosted by Jennifer Carter at the ancestral Draycott Hall where it happened. Her sister's bright, outspoken pre-teen son Howard, who can't resist sneaking into the forbidden 'attic of death', is routinely blamed for most weird things happening, hence no longer insists with protests of innocence, including his printed Christmas cracking spelling bloody vengeance on two of them for a heinous crime. Aunt Lydia, who also lives there, is supposed losing her mind as she apparently forgot how to use the garage control and nearly got asphyxiated by her car exhausts, but the police is only called in after she makes a fatal fall down the stairs at night. Only Howard tells enough of the suspicious truth to arouse Barnaby's full attention, also in Ferdy's death and that of his assistant and lover Claire. Cousin Carter brought his girl fiend Emily and risks loosing a £100,000 trust fund if the executor finds out he smokes before age 21. Howard's father Digby Frears manages to chicken-dare Jennifer out of taking Barnabys' advice to skip the annual hunt, and she's killed by a small cartridge slipped into her pocket. The detectives also find Laydia's secret room, from which the key diary is missing, and the fact Howard's knack for magic is shared by in-law Dominic Jones, who has a secret link.—KGF Vissers
