This series was known to reinvent certain classic creatures of myth and the macabre from time to time, and for the one and only vampire episode of all things, they felt the need to try that out, and for me I don't think that the rather novel concept they ended up going with worked out all that well at all. Simply put, it rearranges the vampire myth completely, and instead of having them take the form of bats, it instead suggests that they are in fact a kind of immortal deadly giant blood-sucking fly that are actually nourished by the sun! Now I thought that was just way too bizarre an idea for them to think of, and that they'd have been better off simply doing a straightforward vampire story. I get that they were trying something new in an episode that is really all about thinking outside of the box and stuff, but it doesn't work and just falls a bit flat. I found the big surprise disappointing, I didn't want flies, I wanted something traditional. They still could have had the vampires be something monstrous and different - just something bat-like! That's my main gripe, it's a good episode, although I didn't care for the ridiculous version of London that's shown during the first half that looked like it was Victorian-times London, complete with gas lamps, police whistles, and annoyingly stereotypical accents. And London is not that foggy - heck, I'm pretty sure anywhere's not that foggy! Trivia alert, I could not help but notice that the mime was wearing a red-and-green striped sweater very similar to that of a certain nightmare-dwelling legendary horror movie maniac! And that sure was one self-disciplined mime. He didn't even make a noise while being used for sustenance! That was a funny thing about the toy-line also. Apart from one Horror Head and one of the rubbish Shrunken Heads line, they never did a proper vampire-themed Doom Zone, which I thought would have been a bit of a no-brainer, as it's one of the all-time famous monsters. This episode is in fact based upon "Mighty Max Squishes Fly", which was one of the more elaborate Doom Zones. Who knew Jobeth Williams could do such an awesome seductive vampire voice? That's the actress who played the mother in the chilling classic "Poltiergeist" by the way. She's my favourite thing about this episode, I love Countess Voska at the beginning when she's all mysterious and wearing a red cloak and is the most vampire-like, before she gradually reveals her true form and things get a wee bit too silly for me. It's kind of obvious that she's no vampire in any conventional sense as soon as she unfurls her gross insectoid wings and acid-spitting tongue. She ends up meeting her demise in quite a comical fashion when she's splattered by Norman with a giant piece of art deco that's shaped just like a fly swatter! Not one of my favourites, but not terrible at all, just a slightly dumb idea I reckon. Fare thee well, my fellow creatures of the night - blah!!!!
