****SPOILERS*** Mike Hammer,Stacey Keach, in being a good friend of his late father got young ex-convict after serving time for arson Joey Peel, Tagen West, a job as a night watchman at a high rise office building in midtown Manhatten. It just happened that on his first day on the job Joey was killed by an electronically set off bomb blast that destroyed the buildings top ten floors! Hammer feeling guilty in somehow, by getting him the job, being responsible for Tommy's death decides to catch those involved and bring them to justice!
Hammer soon discovers that there's an arson ring involved in a number of explosions throughout the NYC Metropolitan area that are working together with members of an insurance firm that's cashing in on them. It's up to Hammer, with the local police having better things to do, to track down the person behind the arson ring who's working with employees of the city gas company in setting up the explosions! By the time Mike Hammer finally straightens all this out after he gets a number of beatings as well as having those working with him like the late Terry's boss Arnie, Buill Henderson, killed and his good friend and leg-man Ozzie, Danny Goldman, beaten into a coma that he finally uncovers those behind this arson insurance scam.
****SPOILERS****As things turned the arsonists were using helium to do their dirty work in the buildings they targeted in getting the insurance. It was after Hammer in a vicious slug-fest with the ace arsonist corrupter gas worker Harry Stark, Raye Birk, whom he put on ice that the main man in these crimes suddenly popped up. That in order for him to finish Hammer off before he lets the cat, or reasons for the explosions, out of the bag. With him not at all realizing what Hammer had in store for him in having the entire building filled with helium! With his partner waiting outside to trigger the explosion not realizing that his boss and fellow arsonist are stuck, tied up by Mike Hammer, in there!
