Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton estate game room, where he discovers Tipton running several model trains. Tipton is just off screen so viewers can see only his right arm]  You sent for me, sir?

    [Tipton switches off the trains]

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, when you see a train, do you wave at the engineer?

Michael Anthony : I used to, when I was a child, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  I still do. Maybe I'm in my second childhood. Go ahead, Mike, try it. You've got a switch there.

[Anthony engages a switch, turns on some trains and they go around a bit. Anthony smiles and is obviously enjoying himself]

John Beresford Tipton : I'm glad you like trains, too, Mike.

[the trains stop. Tipton reaches into his pocket and pulls out an envelope, which he places in one of the train's cars]

John Beresford Tipton : Because you're going to deliver this one on a train.

[Tipton turns on the train, which delivers the envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire.

    [Anthony bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  To find our next millionaire, I had to catch a train. Dan Howell was catching a train, too. Dan was a policeman whose duty often took him into danger.

  • Michael Anthony : [Dan Howell and Link Bailey are in a railroad dining car, finishing up a meal. They are handcuffed together. Anthony approaches their table and sits down]  Which of your gentlemen is Mr. Dan Howell?

    [Howell and Bailey exchange glances]

Michael Anthony : I think you ought to know this meeting is not quite as accidental as it seems. Matter of fact, one of you has led me quite a chase. Which is Mr. Howell?

Dan Howell : [to Anthony]  I don't believe I got your name.

Michael Anthony : Oh, my name is Michael Anthony.

Dan Howell : Oh. I'm Dan Howell.

Michael Anthony : Mr. Howell, I've got to see you. It's quite urgent.

    Dan Howell : I'm listening.

Michael Anthony : [Eyeing Bailey]  Privately, if you don't mind.

Dan Howell : I'm afraid it'll have to wait.

    [to Bailey]

Dan Howell : You through? Come on.

[Howell and Bailey rise from the table]

Dan Howell : Excuse us, Mr. Anthony.

[They depart from the dining car and head back to their room in another car]

Michael Anthony : [Chasing them from the dining car exit to the connecting platform into the next car]  Please, Mr. Howell. Listen to me. I have very important news for you and your wife.

Dan Howell : [Pulling his handcuffed prisoner back to Anthony]  My wife? What do you know about my wife?

Michael Anthony : I know quite a lot about you. I know that you've been a policeman for 12 years. I know that you live on Sycamore and Laramie, that you buy...

Dan Howell : Wait a minute. What are you? Some kind of investigator or something?

Michael Anthony : No, sir. But believe me, I do have something of the greatest interest to you and your wife. Just give me thirty seconds. It'll be the most important thirty seconds of your life. But I must talk to you alone. Couldn't you secure your prisoner to something in your room and then come back out here and talk to me? Believe me, you'll never regret this.

    Dan Howell : I'll see.

[Howell directs prisoner Bailey to their room; handcuffs Bailey to a metal hook; endures threats from Bailey that one day, Bailey will get him; and returns to Anthony]

Michael Anthony : Thank you, Mr. Howell.

[Pulling documents out of his briefcase and displaying a check to Howell]

Michael Anthony : Here, this is for you - a gift.

[Howell becomes agitated, thinking Anthony is bribing him]

Michael Anthony : Wait. Please. Believe me, I have no connection with your prisoner. Look at this - it's a cashier's check.

Dan Howell : A million dollars? I can't use that. A million dollars. Now, look here, Mr...

    Michael Anthony : Anthony.

Dan Howell : Anthony. I'm just a cop. Who'd ever give me a million dollars, and why?

Michael Anthony : I can't tell you that. Your benefactor must remain anonymous. But the money is yours, tax-free, with only one condition.

Dan Howell : A million dollars!

Michael Anthony : You must not tell anyone, on penalty of forfeiture, the exact amount you received, or the circumstances under which you received it. No one except your wife.

    Dan Howell : My wife?

    [Smiles broadly]

Dan Howell : Boy, the things that I can do with this.

Michael Anthony : You may do with it as you like, as soon as you sign this.

Dan Howell : A million dollars.

[Anthony shoves a pen before Howell's face]

    Dan Howell : Oh,

    [Howell signs the document]

Dan Howell : I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Anthony. Matter of fact, I don't understand it.

Michael Anthony : [Returning the document to his briefcase]  You are now a millionaire. You don't have to understand it - just enjoy it.

    [They shake hands]

Michael Anthony : Goodbye, Mr. Howell.

    Dan Howell : Oh, goodbye.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death a few years ago, I was executive secretary to the fabulously wealthy John Beresford Tipton. This is Silverstone, the 60,000-acre estate on which Mr. Tipton lived out the last years of his life. Here he had ample time to indulge his many hobbies, the strangest of which was his habit of giving way to total strangers the anonymous gift of $1,000.000.
