Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study to find Tipton seated in a high backed chair with two pair of women's shoes atop his desk. Only Tipton's hands are visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, I've been thinking about clothes. Or rather shoes in particular. They sometimes tell a story.

[Tipton displays a pair of shoes]

John Beresford Tipton : What do these tell you, Mike?

Michael Anthony : Well, they look comfortable.

John Beresford Tipton : I mean about their wearer?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony through furrowed brow]  I imagine she'd be conservative and practical.

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton displays the second pair of shoes]  And these?

Michael Anthony : I'd guess she'd be what we refer to as a glamor girl.

John Beresford Tipton : Wouldn't it be interesting if both pair belonged to the same girl?

Michael Anthony : I suppose it would, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton hands over envelope to Anthony]  Our next millionaire, Mike.

    [Anthony bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Elizabeth Tander believed the parade had passed her by and the confetti was always for other people. But she was to discover that as long as you wave you flag and blow your horn, there'd be another parade, another chance to march.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony and until his death, I was Executive Secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away $1,000,000. One million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.

  • Michael Anthony : [Appearing at the Tender's apartment door]  Miss Elizabeth Tander?

Elizabeth Tander : Yes, that's me.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. May I come in? I assure you it's most important.

    Elizabeth Tander : Come in.

Mama Tander : [Enters the apartment while a female voice calls out from another room]  Is there someone here, Elizabeth?

Elizabeth Tander : Yes, Mama. It's a Mr. Anthony. He says it's important.

    [to Anthony]

Elizabeth Tander : Do you mind if we go out to the kitchen so we don't disturb her?

Michael Anthony : Yes, that'll be fine.

    [They proceed to the kitchen]

Elizabeth Tander : Won't you sit down?

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

Elizabeth Tander : May I offer you a cup of coffee?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony begins to open his briefcase]  No, thank you. I just had one. Miss Tander, I represent a philanthropist who wishes to remain anonymous. He has authorized me to give you

    [Produces a check]

Michael Anthony : this cashier's check for $1,000,000. And the taxes have already been paid.

Elizabeth Tander : Mr. Anthony, I'm sure you get a lot of laughs with this joke.

    [Stops and thinks]

Elizabeth Tander : Wow, wouldn't it be a scream if someone did give me a check for a million dollars.

Michael Anthony : [Handing Elizabeth the check]  Don't scream, Miss Tander.

Elizabeth Tander : [Examining check]  It is a cashier's check

[Anthony shushes Tander, recalling her mother is nearby]

Elizabeth Tander : for one million dollars.

Michael Anthony : Yes, Miss Tander, I know.

    [Removes document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : Now, one of the terms of this agreement, should you reveal to anyone the exact amount of this gift or the circumstances under which you received it, you will forfeit whatever remains of the funds. The only exception is you may tell your husband if you marry. Did you understand the terms of this agreement, Miss Tander?

Elizabeth Tander : I'm supposed to keep my mouth shut.

Michael Anthony : [Chuckles]  Now, if you'll just sign here.

[Tander signs. She then covers her eyes and looks again at the check]

Michael Anthony : Yes, it's still there, Miss Tander. It didn't go away. Good luck, Miss Tander.

[Anthony starts to head for the door]

Elizabeth Tander : Oh, Mr. Anthony, what am I going to do with this?

    Michael Anthony : Enjoy it!

Elizabeth Tander : All my life I've wanted to do something foolish. I didn't know what, just foolish and fun. Would your friend mind?

Michael Anthony : I'm sure he'd like it. Good bye.

Elizabeth Tander : Good bye, Mr. Anthony.
