Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony raps at an Army office door, to which Brogan responds]  Sgt. Matt Brogan?

    M : Yes, I'm Sgt. Matt Brogan.

Michael Anthony : General Edwards said I'd find you here. My name is Michael Anthony.

M : [Shaking hands with Anthony]  Pleased to meet you, Mr. Anthony. The general often sends friends around to see the post. I've got a Jeep out back. Anyplace you'd like to see first?

Michael Anthony : Sergeant, I didn't come here to inspect the post. I have something for you.

[Opens his briefcase and takes out a check, which he displays]

    Michael Anthony : A cashier's check for $1,000.000.

M : [Growing suspicious]  Where's your pass, Mister?

Michael Anthony : Pass? This is for you - a million dollars.

    [Holding it up]

Michael Anthony : Look at it!

M : I'd rather see your pass. See, we run a GI outfit. I would hate to see it overrun by anyone.

    [Anthony displays his pass]

M : Well, this seems to be in order.

Michael Anthony : So is this check for a million dollars.

M : [Reviews check]  Mister, what you want is Fort Knox.

Michael Anthony : Sergeant, I don't want to cash the check. It's a gift to you and its tax-paid.

M : Well, Mister, you see, with a cashier's check, all I have to do is endorse it here and it will be mine.

Michael Anthony : Yes, I know, Sergeant. I'm trying to give it to you on behalf of a donor who must remain anonymous.

    [Retrieving document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : Now you sign this pledge in which you promise never to reveal the exact amount of the gift or the circumstances under which you received to anyone but your wife. If you do tell, the money will be reclaimed.

M : [Reading agreement]  This looks like a legal document even if it's not in triplicate

Michael Anthony : And this is a check for a million dollars.

    [Offers pen]

    M : A million dollars, huh?

    [Signs the document]

M : You know, I signed up in the Army when I was sixteen. I wanted to see the world. I saw it. But I never expected a million dollars.

Michael Anthony : [Returning the agreement to his briefcase]  Well, Sergeant, I certainly hope you...

[There is a loud boom from outside]

Michael Anthony : What was that?

M : Oh, a cannon. Sun's going down. So is the flag.

[Anthony can see that Brogan is getting melancholy, so he quietly slips out the door. Brogan doesn't notice]

M : You know, I never hear that bugle without thinking that I'm living on borrowed time.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the study to observe Tipton, seated in a high backed chair at his desk, examining a box containing several different U.S. military medals. Only Tipton's left hand is visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : You were in the Army, Mike - or was it the Navy?

    Michael Anthony : Navy, sir.

    [Indicating the box of medals]

Michael Anthony : But they didn't pin that many metals on me.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  These aren't mine. All they pinned on me was guard duty, KP and a few memories. I had a sergeant though...

Michael Anthony : [Smiling and gently interrupting]  I know what you mean, sir. Everyone in the Army seems to remember one sergeant.

John Beresford Tipton : I suppose there are still a few of them left.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire.

[Anthony accepts the envelope and bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years before his death, I was fortunate enough to be Executive Secretary to John Beresford Tipton. John Beresford Tipton, man of many millions and much mystery. This is Silverstone, a 60,000-acre estate he preferred above all of his other properties, where he lived actively with his various interests and pursued his hobbies, one of which was to give away, anonymously and tax-free, one million dollars to people he had never even met.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Master Sergeant Matt Brogan had seen plenty of action. But after Korea, he went on to apply Army discipline at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, struggling with paperwork - in triplicate.
