Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton dining area where he finds Tipton seated in a high backed chair sipping on coffee. Only Tipton's right hand is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, look at this.

[Tipton hands over a large silver spoon to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : A copy of Benvenuto Cellini's most beautiful designs. And as a silversmith, he's never been equaled.

Michael Anthony : [Anthony inspects the spoon]  Very beautiful, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : You've heard of people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth?

Michael Anthony : [With a sly grin]  Well, this one might be a little uncomfortable for a newborn baby, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  It can be, Mike. Sometimes being born into wealth and position and being given every advantage can be more than uncomfortable. It can be very dangerous.

[Tipton hands over envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

[Anthony bows and turns to leave]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was Executive Secretary to the late multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton. Among my duties was the unique job of delivering $1,000,000, which Mr. Tipton frequently gave away, tax-free, to a total stranger. From his fabulous 60,000-acre estate Silverstone, Mr. Tipton carried on his study of human nature. Every subject in his vast storage of knowledge was material for close analysis, and it was always related to the behavior and destiny of man.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony runs into Sylvia outside her mountain cabin door in the evening, startling her]  I'm sorry. I have something for you, Mrs. Merrick. You are Sylvia Whitmore Merrick?

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : [Suspiciously]  You know I am.

Michael Anthony : I wonder if we couldn't step to where there is a little more light?

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : No. Who are you?

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony.

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : Someone sent you to find me?

    Michael Anthony : Well, yes.

[Opens his briefcase and takes out a check]

Michael Anthony : But I have this gift for you.

    [Displays the check]

    Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check for $1,000,000.

    [Sylvia stares at Anthony]

Michael Anthony : Please look at this check, Mrs. Merrick. I had quite a time finding you. I tried all of your addresses - Beverly Hills, Palm Springs, up here.

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : [Softening]  I thought you were someone else.

Michael Anthony : I don't think you heard what I was saying, Mrs. Merrick.

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : You said someone had sent you to find me.

Michael Anthony : I also said this cashier's check belongs to you. A tax-free gift from a donor who wants to remain anonymous.

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : Why would anybody give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : [Removing a document from his briefcase]  This gift is from my employer and comes with one condition of acceptance: you must tell no one, except your husband, the exact amount of the check or the circumstances under which you received it. If you do tell, the money will be reclaimed. Now, if you will just sign this paper.

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : Mr. Anthony, I don't understand anything that's happened to me the past two days. One strange thing after another. Am I imagining all this?

Michael Anthony : Well, you haven't imagined that check, Mrs. Merrick. It's yours to do with as you choose, as soon as you sign this paper.

[Sylvia signs and Anthony returns the pledge to his briefcase]

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : There must be something more for me to say to you, Mr. Anthony.

Michael Anthony : That's quite alright. I hope you enjoy your good fortune.

    [pauses]

Michael Anthony : Pardon me, Mrs. Merrick, but you seem to be a little nervous up here, all alone. Would you like to drive back down to town with me?

Sylvia Whitfield Merrick : Oh, thank you, no. My husband should be back any minute. I don't know what's keeping him so long.

Michael Anthony : Well, good bye, Mrs. Merrick, and good luck.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Sylvia Whitfield Merrick seemed to have everything a girl could want. She had been adopted as a baby by the socially prominent Whitmfield family. She was young, beautiful, and just recently married to the man she loved. So her life should have been calm and happy. But...
