Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study, where he discovers Tipton, seated in a high-backed chair at his desk, from which he is tossing darts at a dartboard. Only Tipton's right arm is visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton indicates the dartboard]  How was that, Mike?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony glances at dartboard with three darts upon the target and smiles]  Very neat, if I may say so, sir.

    John Beresford Tipton : Ah.

    [Chuckles]

John Beresford Tipton : I guess it wasn't bad for my age.

Michael Anthony : Why, I don't know anybody younger in spirit than you, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : Thank you, Mike. I believe it was Cicero who once said, "I, for my part, would rather be an old man for a shorter length of time than be an old man before I was one."

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Here, Mike - our next millionaire.

    [Anthony bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony knocks on the apartment door of Andrew Sterling, who responds]  I'm looking for a Mr. Andrew Sterling.

Andrew Sterling : Oh, I'm Andrew Sterling.

Michael Anthony : Oh, ah, may I come in, please?

Andrew Sterling : Oh, sure, sure, come in.

Michael Anthony : [Entering]  My name is Michael Antony.

    [Opening his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : I have something for you.

    [Presents a check]

    Michael Anthony : A cashier's check.

Andrew Sterling : Oh, I already got my pension this month.

    Michael Anthony : No, no, this isn't a pension. It's a gift.

Andrew Sterling : Gift? From who?

Michael Anthony : I can't tell you that, Mr. Sterling. Would you look at it, please?

    Andrew Sterling : Oh, sure.

    [Puts on his eyeglasses]

Andrew Sterling : Funny, it looks like a...

    [Stops]

Andrew Sterling : It is! A million dollars... . made out to me! Who would give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : Your benefactor must remain anonymous, but I assure you, he has his reasons. It's all yours, and the taxes have already been paid.

[Removing a document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : However, there are certain conditions. You must tell no one, except your wife, the exact amount of money you received, or how you received it.

Andrew Sterling : Oh, I've uh... I've been a widower these many years.

Michael Anthony : Then you must tell no one. If you do, you will forfeit whatever remains of the money. Now, if you will just sign this agreement.

Andrew Sterling : Oh, ah, I... I have a son. May I tell him?

Michael Anthony : No, I'm sorry.

Andrew Sterling : Couldn't I just tell him a white lie?

    Michael Anthony : I'm afraid I can't advise you. That's your problem.

Andrew Sterling : Well, for a million dollars, I guess I can have a few problems.

[Signs the pledge and returns it to Anthony]

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

Andrew Sterling : Thank you. Saying thanks for a million dollars doesn't seem much, but...

[Grabs Anthony's hand and shakes it vigorously while speaking]

Andrew Sterling : You know what I mean.

Michael Anthony : [Beaming]  I know what you mean, Mr. Sterling. The best of luck to you.

    [Anthony leaves]

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was executive secretary to the late multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton. Among my duties was the unique job of delivering $1,000,000, which Mr. Tipton frequently gave away, tax-free, to a total stranger. From his fabulous 60,000-acre estate Silverstone, Mr. Tipton carried on his study of human nature. Every subject in his vast store of knowledge was material for close analysis, and it was always related to the behavior and destiny of man.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a file folder, to the viewers]  Andrew Sterling was a man who had worked hard all of his life. When he was retired, he felt a little like an old nag put out to pasture. But he was sure he could still run a good race, if he had a chance.
