- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters Tipton's private projection room. Tipton is seated in a high-backed chair with only his right arm visible to the viewers. Tipton is smoking a cigar. The projection room is darkened with only the flickering lights from the projector illuminating the room] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike, I want you to see a great football player in action.
- [Tipton and Anthony view a player scoring a touchdown]
- Michael Anthony: He is great, sir. Only one man can make a run like that - Hub Grimes. Great in everything he does. Nothing can stop that man.
- John Beresford Tipton: I wonder.
- [Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]
- John Beresford Tipton: Here, give this to our next millionaire.
- [Anthony bows]
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters the hospital room of Grimes, who is lying in an iron lung] Mr. Grimes?
- Hub Grimes: Yes.
- Michael Anthony: My name is Anthony - Michael Anthony. I've been waiting to see you alone.
- Hub Grimes: What are you, a reporter?
- Michael Anthony: No no, Mr. Grimes. I represent an anonymous benefactor, who would like to give you a million dollars.
- Hub Grimes: I don't get it. Why would anyone give me a million dollars?
- Michael Anthony: [Opening his briefcase and taking out a check] Please, Mr. Grimes, look at this. It's a cashier's check for $1,000,000. There are no strings attached. It's all yours. One million dollars, tax-free. You only have to agree that you will tell no one, except your wife in the event you should marry, what was the source of your money, or the precise amount. If you do, the amount that remains will be reclaimed.
- [Removes a document from his briefcase]
- Michael Anthony: Now, please sign this agreement, and I will deposit the check to your account.
- Hub Grimes: Sign?
- Michael Anthony: [Embarrassed] I hadn't thought of that. It must be signed.
- Hub Grimes: Well, you have a pencil?
- Michael Anthony: [Reaching into his suit] Surely. Indelible.
- Hub Grimes: Oh, this is my girl's idea. Would you bring the paper and hold it right close to me on the briefcase?
- [Anthony complies]
- Hub Grimes: That's fine. Now put the pencil in my mouth, please.
- [joking]
- Hub Grimes: What some people won't do for a million dollars, huh.
- [Anthony obeys]
- Hub Grimes: . A little closer.
- [Hub signs the agreement with Anthony smiling]
- [first lines]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony, and until he passed on, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who frequently gave away $1,000,000, tax-free, to someone who had never met him and was completely unaware of his existence. John Beresford Tipton lived on a 60,000-acre retreat he had named Silverstone, and which he had made into a fabulous world all his own. One night, I was told that Mr. Tipton wanted to see me in his private projection room.
- Michael Anthony: [Reviewing a file, to the viewers] Here is the case history that developed after Mr. Tipton gave me this envelope that night in his private projection room: the case history of Hub Grimes. But when I found Hub Grimes, he was in a hospital, a victim of polio. And the two most important things in his life were an iron lung, which kept him alive, and the girl he loved.
