- Jerry Bell believes that he is unloved because he is ugly, but finds love with a blind woman. He uses his million to cure her blindness, although he thinks she will reject him once she's able to see him.
- A happenstance meeting on a street corner between a lovely blind woman and a young writer who helps her navigate a subsequent stroll soon becomes a romance. We learn that it may be possible for the woman to regain sight, if an expensive surgery is attempted. It's clear that neither party has sufficient funds to enable that, however. The two quickly become an ensemble, and then we learn that they are about marry. Although the writer works hard and hopes to sell a novel to support himself and his soon-to-be wife, we learn that he lacks confidence in his physical appearance. At this point we find that he becomes the recipient of the million dollar award. Immediately he meets with a doctor to arrange for the surgery for his fiancée. He runs to her with the news, and despite her hesitation that it might not work, they proceed with the operation. As the bandages are removed, the young woman is eager to see her beloved for the first time. Yet we find that he has vanished from the room, without explanation. Later, at home, he explains his fears to his mother--that his looks wouldn't meet with approval from the fiancée, and he couldn't stand for that to happen. So he retreats to his books. Later, at a favorite location they used to visit, they run into each other. She seems to know who he is, and despite his attempt to shrink away, she declares her love for him and they are together again.
