- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters a large living room to discover Tipton, seated in a high-backed chair, playing solitaire on a card table before him. Only Tipton's left arm is visible to viewers] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike, when you play solitaire, do you ever manipulate the cards? You know, arrange them so the game will turn out better?
- Michael Anthony: You mean "cheat", sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Well, if you want to put it that way.
- Michael Anthony: [Stuffily] Certainly not.
- John Beresford Tipton: I remember my grandmother used to cheat. She did it quite charmingly. She felt that Fate had really meant to deal her a better hand, and she was merely assisting Fate.
- [Anthony smiles. Tipton hands Anthony an envelope]
- John Beresford Tipton: Our next millionaire, Mike.
- [Anthony accepts the envelope, bows, and, before he turns to leave, arranges two rows of solitaire cards for Tipton, then departs]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] Julia Conrad had always lived gracefully, vacationing in the world's glamour spots, until her husband had died four years ago. Then with a sense of shock she realized she was running out of money. She went to Las Vegas to win. She needed to win.
- [Julia is now at the gambling tables]
- Michael Anthony: Up to now, Fate had usually been kind to Julia Conrad. But at this point, she began to feel Fate needed a little assistance from herself.
- [Julia orders a martini]
- Michael Anthony: Gilbert Patterson, like Julia, had came to Las Vegas to give Lady Luck a little tug in his direction.
- Michael Anthony: [There is a knock at Julia's hotel door. She responds] Mrs. Julia Conrad?
- Julia Conrad: Yes.
- Michael Anthony: ****My name is Michael Anthony. I have a gift for you. May I step inside a moment, please?
- Julia Conrad: ****
- [Starts to close the door]
- Julia Conrad: Well, I'm checking out. I'm rather in a hurry.
- Michael Anthony: ****Oh, this won't take more than a minute of your time, Mrs. Conrad. May I?
- Julia Conrad: ****All right.
- [Anthony enters]
- Julia Conrad: What is it you wanted to see me about?
- Michael Anthony: ****
- [Displaying a check, which he has retrieved from his briefcase]
- Michael Anthony: This is a cashier's check for one million dollars, made out to you. I might add it's tax-free. I appreciate your astonishment. However, I assure you this is quite in order.
- Julia Conrad: Well, who in the world would give me a million dollars?
- Michael Anthony: ****Your benefactor must remain anonymous. You must not tell anyone the exact amount of this check or the circumstances under which you received it, or the money will be reclaimed.
- Julia Conrad: But why me?
- Michael Anthony: I'm afraid I can't answer that question.
- Julia Conrad: But I don't understand.
- Michael Anthony: ####****
- [Anthony insistently pushes the document and pen toward Julia]
- Michael Anthony: You don't have to understand. Just sign this paper to that effect.
- Julia Conrad: [Julia scans the pledge] Well, I'd love to. I... I'd be delighted, enchanted.
- [She signs]
- Julia Conrad: What else do I sign?
- Michael Anthony: That will be quite sufficient, Mrs. Conrad.
- Julia Conrad: ****And... And I can't tell anyone?
- Michael Anthony: ****
- [Putting away the document into his briefcase]
- Michael Anthony: Except your husband, if you do decide to marry again.
- Julia Conrad: ****If I decide? Mr. Anthony, you've just made my decision for me! I am going to marry again, and I'm going to marry the most wonderful man. And I'm going to marry him because I love him, no other reason!
- Michael Anthony: ****Yes, I'm sure everything is going...
- Julia Conrad: [Kissing Anthony's face three times] Thank you!
- Michael Anthony: ****
- [Beaming widely]
- Michael Anthony: Oh, you're welcome.! That is... Thank you, Mrs. Conrad!
- [Starts to turn to door]
- Julia Conrad: ****It's going to be Patterson - Mrs. Gilbert Patterson.
- Michael Anthony: ****
- [Going out the door]
- Michael Anthony: Oh. Goodbye and good luck.
- [first lines]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death, I was executive secretary to one of the world's richest men, John Beresford Tipton. He had what was perhaps the strangest hobby in the world, and one of the few fortunes large enough to indulge it. This is Silverstone, Mr. Tipton's fabulous 60,000-acre estate. Here, after his retirement from the world of business and high finance, he pursued this hobby, which was nothing less than every now and then, giving away to a total stranger the sum of $1,000.000. And, because he insisted on remaining anonymous, I was the man who actually delivered the check
