Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters an outdoor nursery to see an off-camera Tipton working on a plant. Only Tipton's right hand is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, I have a young man for you to see. He has the same problems this plant has.

Michael Anthony : What seems to be the trouble?

John Beresford Tipton : Both of them come from foreign countries, and neither one seems to be transplanting successfully.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : I wonder what a million dollars will do for a young man whose only aim in life is to have a good time.

    [Anthony accepts the envelope]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony rings the doorbell of the Cannon home. Gus comes running from the kitchen, wiping his hands]  All right, I coming. I coming.

    [Opens door]

    Michael Anthony : Yes?

Michael Anthony : How do you do? My name is Michael Anthony. I'm looking for a young man named Nicholas Cannonovich, also known as Nick Cannon. You're his father, I presume.

Gus Cannonovich : Ah, Nick not here. He out tonight.

Michael Anthony : Well, that's very strange. I saw a car driven by a young man go into your garage just a few minutes ago, as I was driving around looking for your house number.

Gus Cannonovich : Nick out. You're mistaken.

Nick Cannon : [Stepping from the next room]  No, pop. I'm here.

    Gus Cannonovich : Nick!

Nick Cannon : [to Anthony]  You sure got here fast.

Michael Anthony : I beg your pardon?

Nick Cannon : What do you use - bloodhounds? Come on, let's get it over with.

    [Indicating Gus]

Nick Cannon : Tell him what happened.

Michael Anthony : I'm sorry, I... I can't reveal the nature of our business in the presence of anyone else, even your father.

Gus Cannonovich : Okay, I go. I go.

    [Gus departs]

Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase and withdrawing a check]  Mr. Cannon, are you strong enough to stand a shock?

Nick Cannon : Stand a shock?

Michael Anthony : A very pleasant one, I assure you.

    [Display a check]

Michael Anthony : I'm here to, uh, give you this cashier's check for $1,000,000, tax-free.

Nick Cannon : How can you make a lousy joke at a time like this? C'mon, take me in. Let's get this over with.

Michael Anthony : I don't know, nor do I want to know, whom you were expecting, but I'm not the man.

[Forcibly placing the check in Nick's hand]

Michael Anthony : This is an authentic check, and it's yours,

[taking a document out of his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : as soon as you sign this pledge. You are not to reveal the source or the amount of this gift to anyone except your wife, if you marry, or the balance will be returned to the donor.

Nick Cannon : [Signing the promise, which Anthony retains]  I, uh, I can't even tell Pop?

    [Anthony shakes head negatively]

Nick Cannon : Well, I uh, I bought a couple of sweepstakes tickets; Pop bawled me out for it. I'll tell him I won a prize. Look uh... can I do anything I want with this money?

    Michael Anthony : Of course.

Nick Cannon : Good, I got a debt to pay, bigger than I ever I thought I could handle. I was going to have to pay with it with time, lots of time. What good would that do? It wouldn't help, would it? But with money, this kind of money, I can pay for anything!

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  How do you do? My name is Michael Anthony, for many years, confidential secretary to an amazing gentleman. He was a multibillionaire named John Beresford Tipton. And even today, after his death, there are many people who never knew his name, who still remember him in their prayers, for each one of them knew him only as 'The man who gave me the million dollars.' Here in his luxurious 60,000-acre estate, Silverstone, I awaited Mr. Tipton's call to take off on a new errand. One sunny afternoon, Mr. Tipton wanted to see me in the nursery, where he loved to work in the soil.

  • Michael Anthony : [Perusing a file; to the viewers]  This is a case history of a young man who changed his name from Nicholas Cannonovich to Nick Cannon. He lived with his father, Gus, who didn't like his son's new name or his new friends.
